On Track To Making Strides

National School Games – ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division, Singapore Open Track and Field Championships 2024, Asian U20 Athletics Championships

The Track and Field Academy's performance at the National School Games (NSG) from 28 March to 19 April 2024 was nothing short of impressive, with Team Sports School securing 32 medals and 63 personal bests.

9 gold medals were clinched by the talented Audrey Koh Shun Yi and Ethan Roman, who both won 2 golds each, Lucas Fun Le Cong, Emre Rizq Mika Harris Mulyadi, Megan Chng Shu Ting and the ‘A’ Division Girls 4x400m relay team and ‘C’ Division Girls 4x100m Relay team.

Ethan Roman, who raced to the 100m and 200m titles, was extremely satisfied with his performance at this NSG. Ethan who joined Sports School last year, did not win any medal at his first NSG. However, that motivated him to work hard and do better this year.

He shared, “My confidence grew when I started winning and improved my personal bests in races leading up to NSG. I also had the support of my teammates who pushed and inspired me in training. The NSG finals was my first time running in the Sports Hub in front of so many spectators. I felt confident in my ability and executed everything that my coach taught me. When I won and hit a new personal best of 11.73s for 100m, I felt very happy and proud of myself. All the effort in training had paid off. My goal is to represent Singapore at the Olympics and win a medal. I know I have room for improvement, and will continue to be determined, stay motivated and work hard until I achieve my goals.”

Audrey Koh, who went into the NSG season with doubts about her form, was glad that she was able to retain her 400m and 400m hurdles titles among the ‘A’ Division Girls. Audrey took inspiration from alumna Shanti Pereira, who also had rough periods in her performance, and gave it her all this NSG as it is her final year. In the 400m event, she managed to shave her timing to achieve a new personal best of 1.00:33, which won her the gold medal.

In an interview with The Straits Times, she shared, “You cannot always be getting PBs and you cannot always be as fast as you want to be. So just put in the work behind the scenes and keep the belief and it won’t be that bad.”

6 Secondary 2 student-athletes from the Multi-Sport Academy also put their skills to the test at NSG. Jessie Tan Qian Chi finished a commendable 4th in High Jump at the competition.

Also, post-secondary student-athletes Jamie El-Redha Ang Norhisham, Raam Kumar Muthukumaran and Laavinia Jaiganth collected 4 medals at the Singapore Open Track and Field Championships 2024, which was held during the same period. Laavinia Jaiganth finished 2nd in 400m and 3rd in 200m. Jamie El-Redha, who has been eclipsing his own personal records consecutively, earned 3rd place in the 200m race. Raam Kumar also attained an outstanding 2nd place in the 400m race, slightly ahead of alumnus Mohammad Irfan Qabeel who placed 3rd in the same race. Other alumni who clinched medals include Kerstin Ong in Women’s 100m and 100m hurdles and Andrew George Medina in Men’s Triple Jump.

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, Lucas Fun Le Cong secured his World Athletics U20 Championships qualification after completing his 110m hurdles in 13.97s at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Dubai from 24 to 27 April 2024. To qualify for the World Junior Championships, men’s hurdlers have to clock timings below 14.20s. Audrey Koh, Huang Weijun and Laavania Jaiganth also participated in relay events in Dubai.
