In a move to streamline Singapore's sports development, the Singapore Sports Institute (SSI), the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI), and Singapore Sports School will be merged into a single organisation. This will mark a significant step in consolidating the nation's High Performance Sports (HPS) ecosystem.

The merger will take place in two stages. Beginning 1 April 2025, SSI and NYSI will combine into one entity, creating a unified sports institute. This new entity will integrate the functions and resources of both institutions, laying the foundation for a more coordinated and effective support system for athletes.

In the following years, once the new organisation has stabilised its operations, it will merge with Sports School. However, Sports School will retain its identity as a school, continuing to serve as the educational arm of Singapore’s High-Performance Sports system. It will remain dedicated to the academic and sporting development of student-athletes. The announcement was made by Minister Edwin Tong when he was sharing the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s budget plans.

He said, “This consolidation will more closely integrate Sports School with the rest of the high performance sporting ecosystem. We will also streamline touchpoints with stakeholders involved throughout an athlete’s life, such as parents and NSAs (National Sports Associations). We will then be able to develop a centrally coordinated pathway that can provide better visibility and assurance to our athletes.”

The consolidation of Singapore’s sports institutes is in line with the government’s broader vision for the Singapore’s sporting landscape. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the Kallang Alive Master Plan at the 2024 National Day Rally, which outlines the creation of a new, integrated facility to serve as the Home of Team Singapore. This facility will cater to athletes' needs, combining training, living, and competition spaces into one ecosystem.

The merger of the HPS institutions reflects the government’s commitment to creating an integrated sports environment that aligns with the vision set out in the Kallang Alive Master Plan. The physical redevelopment of the Home of Team Singapore will take time, but consolidating the sports institutes is a crucial first step in realising this vision.

One of the primary objectives of this merger is to enhance the holistic support provided to athletes throughout their sporting journey, particularly during the critical youth-to-senior transition. By consolidating the functions of SSI, NYSI, and SSP, the new entity will streamline resources and capabilities, ensuring that athletes receive the necessary support at each stage of their development.

Minister Tong further highlighted that the consolidation will allow for a deeper focus on sports science and sports medicine, which will be crucial for improving athletes' physical and mental health. Additionally, plans are in place to work with stakeholders across the sector to professionalise the sports industry and ensure that the support provided to athletes is of the highest standard.

This consolidation marks a significant milestone in Singapore's journey towards sporting excellence. By creating a more cohesive and integrated ecosystem for athletes, the government is laying the groundwork for future generations to excel in sports.
