Bowlers Hit The Lanes Again!
2021 Primary and Secondary Schools League
After a long hiatus from competitive bowling, student-athletes had the opportunity to feel the adrenalin rush, anticipation, and action as they hit the lanes at the 2021 Primary and Secondary Schools League, organised by Singapore Bowling Federation. They proved that they still had the skills and the fire to score well as the Singapore Sports School team clinched five top-8 finishes in the Masters Boys and Girls events.
In the Girls Masters event, Secondary 3 student-athlete Ashley Victoria Lok retained her championship title for the third time. As this was her first time competing on the lanes in about a year, Ashley was extremely nervous as she had high expectations for herself. She shared, “I was super relieved and honestly kind of shocked when I saw my name at the top of the name list because I was placed 4th halfway through the games.” Ashely also wanted to prove herself after falling short of her own expectations when she came in 2nd at a virtual competition held at the end of November. “I believe that the virtual competition was a good wake-up call for me, and I subsequently worked harder on the lanes and tried to build my mental strength and focus in the last two months to earn the championship title.” Ashley also did earned Week 2 High Series title (Girls), as well as the Week 3 Team High Series title with batchmates Felicia Leong Yong Mei and Lim Shi En, who also finished 3rd in the Girls Masters.
A show-stopper during the league was John Yong-Ming Faragulla’s (Secondary 4) perfect game in his 9th frame at the Boys Masters event. After eight frames of an average of about 180 pins, John bowled a perfect score of 300 pins just a game before his final round. From being 8th in ranking, his perfect game pushed him up to the 3rd spot. He said, “It was definitely a pleasant surprise, and a game-changer for me. The lane during that round suited my style, and it totally changed the final outcome.” Darius Huang Weixiang (Secondary 3) outdid John’s total score to come in 2nd in the same event. John also earned the Week 2 Team High Series title together with Secondary 3 student-athletes Jayan Kuay and Ryan Goi Chee Hean. John is currently looking forward to participating at the National Age Group (NAG) Competitions in March.
