Breaking Barriers At Local Meets
IVP Track & Field Championships 2024 and 2024 Singapore Athletics All Comers Meet 1
When Jamie El-Redha Ang Norhisham scored four new personal bests one after another at the IVP Track & Field Championships 2024 from 13 to 15 January 2024, he showed his dedication and determination to break his own limits. The third-year Diploma in Business student-athlete set new personal best timings in the 100m and 200m heats, before breaking his records in the finals of both events.
He shaved off 0.24 seconds from his personal best of 22.04s in the heats and won a gold for finishing the 200m race in 21.8s. In the 100m finals, Jamie finished 3rd after completing the race in 10.82s. His achievements came barely two months after his last race at POLITE 2023 where he also attained 3 personal best timings in the heats and finals and won a gold and bronze in the 200m and 100m races respectively.
On his recent achievements, Jamie shared, “From the recent Polite and IVP, I was surprised by the results that I had achieved during those two competitions. It was during my general preparation phase as my season only starts in February. So, getting a PB from both 100m and 200m, actually hyped me up for 2024 believing that I can do better than that when the season starts.”
With renewed confidence, Jamie has set ambitious personal goals for the year ahead. He aims to improve his current 12th ranking in the 100m to reach the top 5 by the end of the year. Additionally, he plans to maintain his third ranking in the 200m and get closer to the second-ranked timing of 21.44s. Notably, Jamie aspires to qualify for the Singapore squad in 2024 and has set his sights on representing Singapore in the 2025 SEA Games.
Jamie is not the only one with a good start to 2024. Elijah Tan also soared and won two medals at the championships. He returned with a silver in high jump and bronze in long jump. The other medallists are post-secondary student-athletes Louisa Helena Janssen, who contributed to the 4x400m relay team’s silver-medal win, and Sheik Fayz Sheik Alau’ddin, who claimed a bronze in discus throw.
Additionally, 47 student-athletes participated in 86 events at the 2024 Singapore Athletics All Comers Meet 1 from 27 to 28 January. A total of 57 personal bests were achieved. One of the highlights of the time trial is Lucas Fun Le Cong’s outstanding timing for the Men’s U20 110m Hurdles which earned him the 1st place and the qualification for the Asian U20 Championships in Dubai in April 2024. His timing of 14.29s also put him as the top-ranked male athlete to represent Singapore at the World U20 Championships and is just 0.09s off the World U20 qualifying mark. Other student-athletes with notable breakthroughs are Xavier Aloysius Tang, Nikita Mae Jing-Yu Meyers, and Evelyn Seu Hoy Xuan.
