2021 Singapore Open Amateur Championship, Singapore Pro Series Invitational (Leg 4)
The 73rd Singapore Open Amateur Championship from 13 to 16 July 2021 was the first major competition for amateur golfers in more than a year, but golfers faced a gloomy start to the Championship as rain forced organisers to call off the first round. But when competition teed off proper the next day, Singapore Sports School alumna Hailey Loh Suanne took the lead in the ladies’ field with 3-over 75 strokes and would go on to secure her third win in four competitions this year.
Tanah Merah Country Club’s Tampines Course proved a challenge to participants, but national golfer Hailey managed to maintain her one-stroke lead and continued to extend it to five strokes over closest rival Aloysa Atienza by the end of the tournament. She shot a total of 10-over 226 strokes (75, 74, 77) in Rounds 2 to 4 to place first in the field of 18 female golfers. Four other Sports School student-athletes finished in the top 12.
The Men’s division featured a more competitive playing field with 52 amateurs. Alumnus Nicholas Mok Chee Yong had a strong start to the tournament, sign off for 1-under 71 strokes in his first round of play. Post-secondary golfer Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong followed closely behind in 2nd place with 1-over 73. Competition was stiffer in the men’s field which resulted in more changes to the leaderboard over the three days of play.
While Justin, from the customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management (DSLM) programme, slipped to fifth after Round 3, he finished strong with an even-par 72 strokes on the final day to claw his way back up and clinch the runner-up title with 7-over 223 strokes (73, 78, 72). Nicholas and post-secondary golfers Brandon Han Zhen Guang (Diploma in Business Studies Year 3) concluded the tournament with 9-over 225 strokes but placed 4th and 5th on countback. Student-athletes and alumni performed well, with seven of them finishing among the top 12.
The fourth leg of the Singapore Pro Series Invitational presented by FTAG was held in conjunction with the SOAC and featured five former Sports School student-athletes. It was a race to the finish for winner Marc Ong Chong Ching who came from five strokes behind to tie with joint-leader Gregory Raymund Foo Yongen on the last round of the tournament, with the trophy going to Marc on countback.
