Wielding Their Best On The World Stage
Fencing World Championships
Top Singapore fencers, including 13 past and present student-athletes, pitted their wits and skills against the best of the best fencers from around the world at the Fencing World Championships in Cairo, Egypt held from 15 to 23 July 2022.
During the intense competition, post-secondary student-athlete Cheung Kemei (IBDP Year 5) and past student-athlete Amitha Berthier were among the standout performers. Kemei and Amitha fenced against the best and performed well to propel the Singapore Women’s Foil Team into 14th place – making it the best performance by the Singapore Women’s Foil Team at the World Championships. Individually, Amitha was the one who burst through to the top 32 in the Women’s Foil category. Even though she bowed out of the competition after losing to French Olympic team silver medallist Ysaira Thibus, her final position of 31st is the best performance by a Singaporean fencer in the competition.
This competition indeed tested our fencers and pushed them to their limits. The lessons learnt and skills unlocked will only bid them well. Onward, fencers!
