Chen Xingtong Hits Two Golf Titles
Singapore Open Amateur Championship, Southeast Asian Amateur Golf Team Championship 2024
Secondary 4 golfer Chen Xingtong experienced remarkable wave of successes in July at golf championships. Xingtong started the month on a high as she emerged as champion at the Singapore Open Amateur Championship, making her the youngest champion ever. Held from 1 to 5 July 2024 at Orchid Country Club, Xingtong led from the start. She overcame her final-round nerves to finish one-under 291 total, four strokes ahead of Thailand’s Kritchanya Kaopattanaskul and a further stroke adrift from Philippines’ Grave Quintanilla. Her win is a significant achievement to her as she was up against a competitive field of top amateurs. She also clinched a team medal, together with IBDP Year 6 golfer Jaymie Ng, as 2nd runner-up in the competition.
Xingtong, who was inducted into the national squad in 2024, expressed her excitement in an interview with The Straits Times, “I’m incredibly honoured and excited to win the championship. It’s a tournament that means a lot to me because it’s one of, if not the biggest tournament in Singapore, so it’s a big achievement… Being able to win it and show I can compete against players at the highest level regionally and internationally is a great benchmark for me.
“While I still have a lot more work to do moving forward, it’s a good way for me to recognise all the hard work that I’ve put in has worked out.”
She also clinched a team medal, together with IBDP Year 6 golfer Jaymie Ng Wan Xin, as they finished 2nd runners-up in the competition.
Her confidence boosted, Xingtong continued her winning streak at the Southeast Asian Amateur Golf Team Championship 2024 from 8 to 12 July 2024. The Championship was contested across four tournaments — Putra Cup, Santi Cup, Lion City Cup and Kartini Cup — over four intense days of action. This year’s tournament featured golfers from Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.
Xingtong clinched the title at the Kartini Cup with a score of four-over 220. In a thrilling finish, the all-Sports School team consisting of Xingtong, Passion Hsu Le Ting, Denise Ng Wan Xuan and alumna and captain Hailey Loh Suanne, secured 2nd place for their team after a tie-breaker with Thailand, with both teams finishing on 13-over 445. Xingtong and Passion also received medals for achieving the best score for one day in the tournament.
Similarly, Jaymie Ng and alumna Inez Ng Xin Yi earned a 2nd-place finish in the team event of the Santi Cup. Aaron Wee Zheng Kai also did well in the Lion City Cup, helping his team secure a title victory.
Passion had another good outing on the greens when she took part in the 47th Royal Selangor Golf Club Championship Ladies Amateur Open from 23 to 25 July in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Passion finished 2nd, just three shots behind Malaysian Winnie Ng. She also won the 3rd place for the Nett Category and had a 2nd Day Best Gross of -1. In the team event, Passion, Secondary 1 golfer Anjanette Tan Le Xuan and their teammate were runners-up in both the Gross and Nett categories.
