Miguel Awarded Unleash The Roar! Overseas Scholarship
Unleash The Roar! Overseas Scholarship
Secondary 3 footballer Miguel Alexandro Garcia is one of the nine youth footballers who earned the Unleash The Roar! Overseas Scholarship. The scholarship recipients will embark on an exciting journey abroad, with the scholarship covering expenses including their football programme, tuition, accommodation fees, and insurance.
Miguel will be heading to Madrid, Spain, to train for a local club Rayo C. Alcobendas, and study at Kings College Madrid for two years.
Hi father, Leroy Garcia, expressed his excitement about his son’s opportunity: “We were obviously ecstatic and extremely proud of his achievement because it was something that he worked really hard on.”
He added, “We made it very clear to him that to succeed, he has to work really hard for it, and that applies to studies as well. We have been very supportive of his choices as long as they are the right ones. Having a football career is his dream and every footballer dreams of playing in Europe. Now, his dream can come true and we are behind him 200% of the way.”
Miguel started developing an interest in football after watching the 2018 World Cup when he was 9 years old. His parents enrolled him in the ActiveSG Football Academy that year. By the next year, Miguel was selected for the Development Centre (DC) in ActiveSG and represented Singapore at the Kanga Cup in Australia. Since he was keen to further his football development, he joined Sports School when he was in Secondary 1.
Miguel is the second footballer from Sports School to receive the Unleash The Roar! overseas scholarship. Loo Kai Sheng was among the inaugural batch of overseas scholarship recipients. He spent a year training in ESC LaLiga & NBA Academy in Madrid.
