Double Bronze At Asian Fencing Championships
Asian Fencing Championships 2023
The Asian Fencing Championships 2023 was nothing short of electrifying as it attracted the finest fencers from the Asia-Oceania region to clash swords and test their mettle at the zonal championship held from 17 to 22 June 2023 in Wuxi, China.
12 Sports School past and present student-athletes stepped up to the challenge, forming half of the 23-men Team Singapore fencing contingent at the championships. The Sports School team includes Amita Berthier, Bron Sheum Han Shen, Cheung Kemei, Dan Wei Zuo, Filzah Hidayah Nor Anuar, Jean Koh, Juliet Heng Jie Min, Max Neo Wei Kit, Nicole Wee Sher Tynn, Si To Jian Tong, Simon Lee Renjie and Zephaniah Ian Kiew.
With resolute determination, Amita etched her name into Singapore's fencing history by securing a joint bronze in the Women’s Foil. She had become the first Singaporean fencer to reach the competition’s semi-finals, where she lost 15-8 to sixth seed, China’s Chen Qingyuan.
“I was in the top eight last year, so this is definitely progress. I have lots to keep working on, but every victory is a big step forward. “Truly happy with my performance and looking forward to getting better and working towards the Asian Games as well,” said the alumna in an interview with The Straits Times.
With her sights set on the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Amita hopes to earn a spot through her world ranking. Her feat at the championships will earn her some crucial points in her qualification campaign, as she needs to be among the top two fencers in the Asia-Oceania region.
Joining Amita on the podium was IBDP Year 6 student-athlete Cheung Kemei. The duo were part of the Women’s Foil team that mirrored their previous year's achievement to capture a joint bronze in the team event.
