Newly-promoted national players Koen Pang Yew En and Goi Rui Xuan, both of whom have put their post-secondary studies on hold to play table tennis full-time, are beginning to show their killer shots.
Koen won 2 Doubles gold, 1 Team bronze and 1 Singles bronze medals, while Rui Xuan won 2 bronzes in the three European Junior competitions they competed over 12 days.
Koen was one-half of the Singapore team that won the 2019 Czech Junior and Cadet Open Boys’ Doubles gold medal. Then, he paired with Diploma in Sport Management Year 2 student-athlete Beh Kun Ting to win the 2019 Swedish Junior and Cadet Open Boys’ Doubles gold medal, before competing at the 47th Safir International Tournament where he won the U21 Boys’ Singles bronze medal. Koen was also a member of the team that won the Team bronze medal in the Czech competition from 13 to 17 February, as was Kun Ting.
Rui Xuan, together with Secondary 2’s Zhou Jingyi and Secondary 4’s Koh Jia Qi, won the Team bronze in the Czech Republic and followed up her good form with a Girls’ Doubles bronze medal with Diploma in Business Studies Year 2’s Wong Xin Ru in the Swedish tournament from 20 to 24 February.
Not to be outdone, youngsters Zhou Jingyi, Ser Lin Qian and Izaac Quek Yong also paddled their way to medals. Jingyi contributed to the higher age-group category Junior Girls’ Team bronze medal although she is only 13, and paired with Lin Qian for the Cadet Girls’ Doubles bronze medal in the Czech Republic. It was at the Safir International from 22 to 24 February that she shone, winning the Girls’ U14 gold medal; Lin Qian bowed out at the Quarter-Finals. Izaac won the Mini-Cadet Boys’ Singles silver medal in Sweden, and was a semi-finalist in the Boys’ U14 competition at the Safir International.
