Lessons From The Champions - Anthony Ervin

On 28 May 2028, 64 student-athletes, staff, and parents gathered at the AVA for an inspiring morning with Anthony Ervin, a four-time Olympic swimming medalist and two-time World Champion.

Presented in a Question and Answer format, the swimming champion shared his remarkable sporting journey, reflecting on the highs and lows of his athletic pursuit.

At 19 years old, the freestyle specialist competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, winning a gold medal in the Men's 50-meter Freestyle and a silver medal in the 4×100-meter Freestyle event. Despite his early successes, setbacks prompted him to pause his competitive swimming pursuits in 2003.

Yet, he remained connected to the water, continuing to swim recreationally. Encouraged by his mentor and coach, he resumed competitive swimming in 2011, following an eight-year hiatus. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he staged a triumphant comeback, clinching yet another Olympic gold medal at the age of 35 and became the oldest individual Olympic gold medalist in swimming history.

Expressing gratitude to his coaches for their pivotal role in his success, he urged our student-athletes to demonstrate kindness and appreciation towards those who have supported them.

He offered the following advice to student-athletes: “All things shall pass whether you are on fire or in slump. Not every day is going to be perfect. Stay on course. Some people may come back and some may do something else. Give yourselves time.”

The session, which is part of the school’s Lessons from the Champions series, was made possible by the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship.
