Swimmers Make A Splash
9th Singapore National Swimming Championships (Short Course Metres)
Singapore National Swimming Championships (Youth 13-18yrs)
It was an action-packed weekend for our swimmers who participated at the 9th Singapore National Swimming Championships (Short Course Metres) and Singapore National Swimming Championships (Youth 13-18yrs) which concluded on 28 November 2021, hauling a total of 8 gold, 8 silver and 13 bronze medals from both competitions.
At the 9th Singapore National Swimming Championships (Short Course Metres), record-breaker Maximillian Ang Wei stole the show as he took down 3 national records.
First, the post-secondary student-athlete smashed his 2019 record of 2:10.39s and clocked a FINA “B” cut timing of 2:08.49s to win the Men’s 200m Breaststroke final. Then, he took down Lionel Khoo's 2017 record of 59.65s with another FINA “B” cut National Record of 58.72s in the Men's 100m Breaststroke. He finally went on to break the record set by alumnus Pang Sheng Jun in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley heats earlier that morning, and emerged first in 1:57.18s in the final, while Sheng Jun came in second in 1:57.79s. Alumna Amanda Lim has also done us proud as she clocked 24.60s, a FINA “A” cut time in the Women’s 50m Freestyle. All three of them are among the 14 swimmers who have qualified for the FINA Swimming World Championships 2021 (SCM) in Abu Dhabi in December.
Maximillian shared, “I feel elated with my achievements. I have worked hard for the meet and was satisfied with my performance to a certain extent. I did all personal bests in my events and broke three national records. This gives me the motivation to do better and race with other top swimmers at the FINA Swimming World Championships 2021. I will also aim for better at the upcoming SEA Games (Southeast Asian Games) and do my very best to medal at Asian Games. I'm excited for what is to come."
IBDP Year 5 student-athlete Clydi Chan also shone in the competition as she clinched a gold medal in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley with a personal best timing of 2:17.04, and a bronze in the Women’s 400m Freestyle with a personal best timing of 4:20.65s.
A total of 27 student-athletes participated in the four-day meet held from 25 to 28 November, winning an impressive medal haul of 4 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze, as well as setting 119 personal best timings.
Separately at the Singapore National Swimming Championships (Youth 13-18yrs) held from 26-28 November at Singapore Sports School, Secondary 1 student-athlete Har Mint stood out from the crowd as she won a whopping 5 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze), almost half of the 12 medals won by the academy. She has also achieved personal best results in all the five events that she had medalled in.
Har Mint was pleasantly surprised at her results. She said, “This competition turned out way better than I had expected and I am really pleased with the outcome despite feeling unsure of myself before the competition. Of course, I could not have done it without the help and support of my parents, coaches and teammates. In the short term, I would really love to be able to participate in the Asian Games.”
The other Secondary 1 student-athlete who had produced outstanding results is Vivienne Chew En. She is the only swimmer who won medals at both competitions. She won 3 medals (2 gold, 1 silver) among the youths in the Swimming Championships and a bronze medal for the Women’s 200m Fly in the Short Course Metres Championships.
The team of 19 swimmers won 4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze, as well as achieved 79 personal bests.
