Making A Mark on the World Stage
Fencing World Cup 2022 in Belgrade
Facing a top-ranked team in any competition must rattle nerves. However, our fencers from the Singapore Women's Foil Team showed nerves of steel when they faced top-ranked opponents from Team USA in the Fencing World Cup 2022 held in Belgrade.
In an exciting duel, Cheung Kemei (IBDP Year 5) and past student-athlete Amita Berthier were part of the four women Singapore team (Rank 16) that went all out to stun Team USA (Rank 1) by rallying from behind and beat them 44-41 in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, Team Singapore lost in the hands of Germany. Nevertheless, this achievement is a first for our Women’s Foil Team in a World Cup.
Max Neo Wei Kit (Diploma in Business, Year 3) and Joel Chiu Ka Jyn (IBDP, Year 6) also featured in the Singapore Men’s Foil Team that finished 16th in the competition. Max shares his thoughts on the competition.
“The competition gave us the opportunity to compete with elite athletes from all around the world at a senior level. Getting to fence them brought a different kind of fun and excitement as compared to local competitions. During our match against Brazil, our strategy to score more points against their weaker fencers paid off as we triumphed over Brazil 45-37. My thoughts from this competition are that whoever your opponent is, you should always have confidence in yourself and give your very best no matter the situation. Nothing is impossible!”
