Comrades in Hard Work and Sweat

National School Games - Track and Field (‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ Division), 5th Youth Asian Athletics Championships

The crowd was buzzing with excitement on the final day of the Track and Field National School Games at the Singapore National Stadium. Singapore Sports School’s supporters were out in full force, cheering and chanting for their school mates. After two weeks of action since 10 April 2023, Sports School added to the medal tally in the presence of a good crowd of supporters on the final day of the competition on 28 April. They fought through fire and brimstone to secure a total of 32 medals during the two-week NSG.

Though the Track and Field team looked calm and ready, some of them were so nervous that they had their hearts in their mouths during the finals. However, they were focused on giving their best after months of hard work to prepare for the NSG.

‘A’ Division tracker Audrey Koh Shun Yi was the queen of 400m races as she won Sports School’s first gold medal in the 400m finals followed by another gold medal in the 400m hurdles finals. Not to be outdone, her fellow ‘A’ Division team mate Janelle Lum Wai Yan came through with a gold medal in the 800m race.

The relay events were the highlight during the final day of the competition as they gave the crowd much reason to rejoice and celebrate. The ‘B’ Division Girls’ relay teams swept titles for the ‘B’ Division 4x100m and 4x400m races and the ‘B’ Division Boys’ 4x400m. The ‘A’ Division Girls’ and B’ Division Boys’ came in 2nd in the 4x100m race, while the ‘A’ Division Girls’ team had a 3rd-place podium finish in the 4x400m race.

Another highlight of the competition was Secondary 4 sprinter Emir Muhammad Rashid’s incredible sportsmanship when he immediately helped a Raffles Institution competitor who fell hard after the 100m race. Emir finished the race behind him in 3rd place, but won many hearts when he demonstrated good character and spirit after helping the winner.

Lucas Fun Le Cong, who came in 2nd and 3rd in the ‘A’ Division Boys’ High Jump and Long Jump respectively, headed to the 5th Youth Asian Athletics Championships from 27 to 30 April 2023 in Uzbekistan, Tashkent. Lucas, who specalises in decathlon, came in 3rd and broke his own national youth record with 6,277 points. He set the last national youth record in August 2022 with 5,770 points.
