Spotlight On 92 SEA Games-Bound Student-Athletes
32nd Southeast Asian Games Send-Off Ceremony
The 31st SEA Games was delayed due to the global pandemic and was held in May last year in Vietnam. The 32nd SEA Games will continue to take place in Cambodia this May – short of a gap year for athletes to prepare themselves. The short runway has not deterred our past and present student-athletes who are raring to go, and they strive to bring glory to Singapore.
Out of 558 Team Singapore athletes, 92 of them are our past and present student-athletes. They have kept their foot on the pedal and ramped up their performance to be included in this year’s Team Singapore. Out of which, 30 of them are our current student-athletes. This year’s Games will also set the stage for 34 debutants, who have stepped up to the plate to earn their spot with the national team.
We honoured and recognised their efforts at the SEA Games Send-Off Ceremony held at the Singapore Sports School Auditorium on 26 April 2023. Guest-of-Honour, Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the SEA Games, Dr Hing Siong Chen presented a customised poster and a ROAR plush toy to the SEA Games student-athletes and witnessed them recite the athlete’s oath.
SEA Games debutant, Sports School alumnus and Pencak Silat exponent Muhammad Affiz Mohamed Zakri then shared, “I feel very fortunate and excited to make my debut in this year’s Games. It’s been a long time coming. I have witnessed my seniors being in the Games and now it’s finally my turn. This would not have been possible without the support of my parents, the Singapore Silat Federation and my friends. I will grasp this opportunity with both hands and never look back.”
“I hope to attain the gold medal for Singapore. All of us in Team Singapore have sacrificed and worked so hard leading up to the Games. I know that we will do our best and work hard to achieve our goals. I also hope that Team Singapore can improve from the previous medal tally and set new national records. We’ve come so far as a nation and we must continue to go from strength to strength. Majulah Singapura!”
