4 Pencak Silat Exponents Crowned World Champions
19th Pencak Silat World Championship 2022
When Secondary 5 student-athlete Aniq ‘Asri Mohammad Yazid completed his first bout at the World Championship, he felt dejected as he got injured. He thought it would be challenging for him to continue to fight for the title while nursing an injury. “Don’t give up,” said his coach – and he kept that in mind as he went from one round to the next. Eventually, Aniq won the gold medal in the Men’s Tanding Class B (50 –55kg) and gained a valuable lesson on perseverance.
16-year-old Aniq is the youngest World Champion from Singapore. He had a upset win over Malaysia’s Khairi Adib Azhar, the reigning SEA Games champion via technical knockout.
19-year-old Amirah Sahrin, who is on the extended programme in the Diploma in Sport Management course, was part of the artistic Women’s Regu team that won gold. The trio in the team overturned the formbooks when they topped the table, after managing a bronze medal at the SEA Games just months before.
In an interview with The Straits Times, Amirah shared, "It feels surreal, and we are still in disbelief. The win was unexpected because we were competing against our opponents from the SEA Games (Vietnam) who went on to win gold, so we knew what we were up against."
Aniq and Amirah were two of the 19 World Championship debutants in the 30-man strong Team Singapore contingent.
The titles won by the other two World Champions and alumni, Muhammad Iqbal Abdul Rahman and Sheik Farhan Sheik Alau’ddin, were more expected. Both of them were already reigning World Champions, and recently won gold at the SEA Games.
Iqbal was glad to defend the title that he won in 2018 in the Artistic Male Singles Tunggal event. For Farhan, his gold-medal win over Rangga Andikka in Men’s Tanding Class J (90 – 95kg) is his fourth title.
Also, Farhan’s sister, Secondary 3 student-athlete Nur Shaqira Sheik Alau’ddin, had her first taste of the excitement of the World Championship. She won a bronze in Class F (70 – 75kg). Nadhrah Sahrin, Siti Khadijah Mohd Shahrem and Abdul Raazaq Abdul Rashid also reached the finals but finished with silver medals.
The 19th Pencak Silat World Championship was back after a four-year hiatus due to the pandemic. It was held in Melaka, Malaysia from 27 to 31 July 2022, and featured about 500 exponents from 40 countries.
