First International Win For Ming Hong
VICTOR Future Series Nouvelle-Aquitaine 2022
Post-secondary student-athlete Lim Ming Hong (Diploma in Business, Year 3) clinched the Men's Singles title in the VICTOR Future Series Nouvelle-Aquitaine 2022. It was the first time that the badminton league of Nouvelle-Aquitaine organised a round of the future series. The tournament was held from 25 to 28 August 2022 at the Bellegrave Gymnasium in Pessac, France.
Ming Hong had a good start to his campaign when he outperformed Spain’s Ernesto Baschwitz 21-15, 21-8. In the next round, he met Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dang whom he lost to in the first set, but made a comeback in the next two sets to claim a spot in the quarter-finals.
Denmark’s Mads Juel Moller, who was up against Ming Hong, gave him a good fight. Though Ming Hong lost the first set, he gave his all to win Moller in the second and third sets. His win against Moller 18-21, 22-20, 21-17 set up a meeting with France’s Grėgore Deschamp whom he confidently won 21-11, 21-19.
In the finals, he met home favourite Valentin Singer. Ming Hong had a rough start initially but came back strongly. The French were gunning for Singer to bring home the title on their home ground, but Ming Hong caused a big upset when he defeated Singer 16-21, 21-18, 21-16 to claim the top spot on the podium.
This is Ming Hong's first international win. He expressed his delight at winning the title: "Winning a competition is an amazing feeling for any athlete. However, the adrenaline of competing is what every athlete looks forward to. There was no competition during the pandemic for young players. I was envious of seeing my seniors competing at the highest level while the younger players had to be content with training after training.

This win only signifies that I am on the right track and progressing well. There are still many areas of my game that I need to work on, and I want to look forward to being a better badminton player. As an athlete, we must focus on the process of training well and improving our game. This way, we can continue our journey of competing in bigger and higher-level competitions."
