Paddlers Serve Up Victory
Asia Junior Sports Exchange Games 2023
Sports School formed a strong presence within the six-member Team Singapore Table Tennis contingent at the Asia Junior Sports Exchange Games 2023, with all six of them being our Secondary 1 and 3 student-athletes. They were Ellsworth Le, Jaryl Wong Yi Zhong and Loy Xing Yao (Secondary 3) who formed the boys' team, and Loy Ming Ying, Janelle Chiang Rui En (both Secondary 1) and Joeunn Seow (Secondary 3) who played pivotal roles in the girls' team.
Following three days of intense competition held in Tokyo, Japan, from 25 to 28 August 2023, Team Singapore emerged triumphant, securing the title against their counterparts from Beijing in a gripping final.
Earlier at the semi-finals, the Singapore team overcame their Malaysian opponents with a 3-2 victory. During the Men’s Singles, Ellsworth contributed a pivotal point to Team Singapore's tally. He then partnered Ming Ying in the Mixed Doubles, adding another crucial point. The Women’s Doubles pair, which comprised of Janelle and Ming Ying, secured the last point.
The trio continued their outstanding performance in the final match, with Ming Ying delivering successful performances in the Women’s Singles and the Mixed Doubles alongside Ellsworth. Janelle and Joeunn excelled in the Women’s Doubles, cementing the team’s eventual 3-2 victory over their Beijing opponents.
Beyond competitive play, the competition offered a unique platform for budding athletes from various Asian cities, including Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Ulaanbaatar, Yangon, Iwate, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Tokyo, to gather. This fostered not only sportsmanship and skill development but also facilitated cultural exchange.
