Alumni Fly High With Scholarship Support
Feature: Scholarship Recipients for Undergraduate Studies
Singapore Sports School provides a strong foundation for its student-athletes to excel both in sports and academics. The school emphasises holistic development, nurturing talents in a variety of sports while also offering robust academic programmes. This dual focus ensures that students are well-prepared for their future endeavours, whether in athletic or academic fields.
Equipped with a solid foundation from Sports School, alumni are making significant strides in their academic and professional journeys, supported by prestigious scholarships. These scholarships support talented individuals in furthering their undergraduate studies and pursuing their dreams.
Among recent scholarship recipients is Abie Chi En Shuen, a former national gymnast who graduated from Singapore Sports School last year with a perfect score of 45 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Abie’s passion for animal welfare was ignited by a documentary she watched about underground animal markets and their illegal trade. The film exposed the harsh realities faced by animals due to human greed, sparking in her a deep desire to protect these vulnerable beings.
Abie is now pursuing her dream by studying for a Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. She has received the Singapore Food Agency’s Sustainability Scholarship to further studies. She is particularly interested in working as a veterinarian in the public sector, where she hopes to bridge the gap between veterinary medicine and the food industry to enhance food security in Singapore. Through her work, she aims to make a significant contribution to public health and the advancement of veterinary science, ultimately making a meaningful impact on the community. During her studies, Abie will gain practical experience and develop her skills through various roles at the Singapore Food Agency after graduation.
Reflecting on her scholarship, Abie shared, “I am very grateful for the unwavering support I have received from Mr Ong, my teachers, friends, and parents. This scholarship is a testament to their encouragement and support, and it belongs to them as much as it does to me. Receiving this scholarship will not only alleviate my financial burden but also enable me to dedicate my full attention to my academic journey. I am confident that with this support, I can fully immerse myself in each aspect of the course, savouring every experience it has to offer. Beyond its financial relief, this scholarship also promises meaningful connections with a community of like-minded individuals.”
Another scholarship recipient is Alexis Lee Shin Ying, formerly from the Badminton Academy, was one of the top scorers in the Class of 2022. Alexis received the prestigious A*STAR scholarship to support her undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Imperial College London. Her interest in science and research was piqued during her IBDP. She has been especially interested in Chemistry since Secondary 3 when she developed a keen interest in the subject. Alexis expressed her joy upon receiving the scholarship, saying, “I was extremely ecstatic because I never dared to dream of getting such a scholarship. I was also relieved because it meant I could focus on my studies without the financial burden. This scholarship covers my school fees, living allowance, and annual return flights. Beyond that, it provides first-year undergraduates with a research internship opportunity, which is almost impossible to get. It essentially prepares us better for our future in research by giving us more experience and exposure to different fields of research.”
Alumnus Marcus Ngeh Wei Ming from the Shooting Academy graduated from Singapore Sports School in 2017 before joining Republic Polytechnic’s School of Applied Science, where he earned a Diploma in Biomedical Science. Marcus has now received the Singapore-Industry Scholarship and will be pursuing a joint degree in Civil Engineering offered by the Singapore Institute of Technology and the University of Glasgow. His interest in civil engineering was sparked during his National Service when he saw his friends studying architecture. With a strong background in science and physics, Marcus decided to explore this field further. He hopes to focus on his studies and pursue a career as a consultant in the built environment sector.
Also, water polo player Celeste Ferrao Wan, who was recently part of the winning team at the 23rd Asia Pacific Water Polo Tournament in Hong Kong, was awarded the NTU Talent Scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Sports Science and Management at Nanyang Technological University. Celeste, who graduated from the Diploma in Business course jointly offered with Republic Polytechnic, shared, “I am extremely grateful, honoured, and privileged to be awarded the NTU Talent Scholarship. Most times, scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements. I am grateful to NTU for having a scholarship that recognises non-academic achievements like my talent in sports (water polo).”
These scholarships have not only alleviated the financial burden on these talented athletes but also given them a platform to shine brighter as champions in life, enabling them to pursue their passions and contribute meaningfully to their chosen fields.
