Wushu Exponents Shine On Home Ground
4th World Taijiquan Championships
The 4th World Taijiquan Championships 2024, held at the OCBC Arena from 24 to 27 August, attracted Wushu exponents around the world to compete for a spot on the podium. Competitors showcased their skills in three taiji disciplines: taijiquan, which emphasises fist techniques; taijijian, which involves sword techniques; and taijishan, where participants perform with a Chinese fan. Zeanne Law, Charlotte Ng, Chan Jun Kai, Trinity Chua, and Jolie Goh took the competition mat to shine.
They collectively earned 6 medals over the five-day competition, including 3 golds and 3 silver medals, contributing heavily to Team Singapore’s 5 golds, 4 silvers and 5 bronzes.
Zeanne Law Zhi Ning, who was crowned World Champion in the taijiquan event at the World Wushu Championships in the United States, made a remarkable impression. Up against Brunei's Basma Lackhar and compatriot Vera Tan for the top three positions in the optional taijiquan event, Zeanne emerged victorious with a score of 9.700, taking home the gold medal. She topped the Women’s Taijishan category with a score of 9.706, while schoolmate, Trinity Chua Yun Shan earned silver in the same event with a score of 9.656. Zeanne also won a silver in the Women’s Taijijian event.
In an interview with The Straits Times, Zeanne reflected on her achievements: “While I’m proud of my performance, I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself to repeat these successes. I’m focusing on using these experiences to improve further for future competitions.”
Charlotte Ng Leting also achieved notable success, winning gold in the Women's 3rd Set Taijiquan (39 Movements) C-A&B event. She posted a score of 9.160 to finish first among the five athletes.
Charlotte, who joined Sports School earlier this year, shared her thoughts on her win in her first senior-level competition: “I had a good mentality and was able to remain calm and relaxed to deliver my best performance today. This is my first senior international competition and my best result, and I hope to get good scores in the Sept 22-30 World Junior Wushu Championships in Brunei, and go on to represent Singapore in major Games like Vera (Tan) is doing.”
Chan Jun Kai secured a silver medal in the Men’s New Chen Style Taijiquan, demonstrating his talent on an international stage.
Meanwhile, Jolie Goh showed her skills in demonstration routine events, securing three first-prize accolades.
