Althea Storms To U15 Masters Win

2019 Storm U22 International Junior All-Stars Bowling Championship, Penang Pesta International Bowling Championship


Althea Dang Thanh Ly beat 26 other bowlers in the Girls Under 15 Masters event to claim the Girls gold medal at the 20th Storm U22 International Junior All-Stars Bowling Championship on 10 December 2019. She concluded the eight-game final with a convincing margin of 99 pinfalls ahead of local Nada Nawwarah Abd Jalil.

The Singapore Sports School Secondary 3 student-athlete was joint-11th by the end of the qualifying round, having knocked down a three-game series of 621 pinfalls. She, and four other teammates Colleen Pee (Secondary 3), Jade Ooi, Jerlyn Lam and Shirlene Wong Xue Ling (Secondary 2), made the cut for the 22-strong Finals. Althea’s strong bowling on the lanes saw her overtake Colleen, the leader for five games, and seal the win with a total of 1,715 pinfalls. Colleen (4th), Shirlene (7th) and Jerlyn (8th) also did well to finish in the top 10.

In the Boys U15 Masters, Secondary 3’s Heng Jun Rui also managed a top-10 finish, coming in 9th. George Yin Xu (Secondary 3) was also on fire during during the tournament in Selangor, Malaysia, from 3 to 13 December 2019, scoring his first perfect 300 game in the Masters Qualifiers on 8 December.

Meanwhile, Secondary 1 bowlers were in another part of Malaysia, working hard to string the strikes at the 47th Penang Pesta International Bowling Championship. Ashley Victoria Lok, an alumna of Methodist Girls’ School (Primary), won the Girls U16 Masters Finals silver medal and was Bowling Academy’s only medallist at the tournament from 10 to 18 December. She also won an award for bowling the highest series in the Girls U16 division of 614 pinfalls over three games. Six out of seven bowlers qualified for the U16 Masters Finals.
