U19 Shuttlers Secure Podium Finishes
2019 Singapore Youth International Series
It was a hard-earned silver medal for Singapore’s top junior shuttler Nur Insyirah Khan Abdul Hamid Khan at the 2019 Singapore Youth International Series from 18 to 24 November 2019.
Singapore Sports School DBS Year 2 student-athlete Insyirah started well, clearing her first test against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yu-Hsuan in the Round of 32 before her next two encounters with Malaysian Khor Jing Wen and Thai Natchananpon Roongpiboonsopit who threatened to halt her progress towards a podium finish in the Women’s Under 19 Singles event.
Insyirah proceeded to book her spot in the Final against World Junior No. 9 Anastasiia Shapovalova of Russia after defeating Hong Kong’s Lui Lok Lok. The World Junior No. 50 Singaporean was unable to hold off the attacks of her stronger opponent and eventually settled for the runner-up prize after two sets (15-21, 18-21). Insyirah’s second place-finish pushed her up 14 spots to No. 36 in Badminton World Federation’s Junior list on 26 November 2019.
Sports School’s male shuttlers also fared well in the U19 division, winning another 1 silver (Men’s Doubles) and 1 bronze (Men’s Singles) medals for Singapore. Men’s Doubles pair of Junsuke Kubo and Wesley Koh Eng Kiat secured the silver medal after defeating Malaysia’s Ling Wei Jie and Yong Jing Ren 2-1 (21-17, 15-21, 21-19).
In the final against Chinese Taipei duo Liao Jhuo-Fu and Lu Wei Hsuan, DSPM Year 1 shuttlers Junsuke and Wesley opened the match with 21-13 while their opponents took the second set with a similar set of scores to force a deciding set. The 45-minute match concluded with a seat-gripping 23-25 third set in favour of the Chinese Taipei pair.
Darrion Michael Ng Weng Soong from DBS Year 2 was Sports School’s third medallist with a Men’s U19 Singles bronze.
