Gymnasts Secured Huge Medal Haul
Singapore Gymnastics Classic
After nearly a nine-month hiatus from competitions, 15 past and present gymnasts dusted off their competition leotards to participate in the Singapore Gymnastics Classic from 4 to 5 December 2021.
In the Men's Artistic Gymnastics competition, the team won a total of 4 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze in the junior category, and 1 gold in the senior category. Jovi Loh Jia Le (Secondary 2) took top honours in the junior category, bagging 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, while Asher Pua (Secondary 4) brought home the other gold in the vault and a silver in parallel bars despite suffering a fall on his elbow in March, and had to undergo surgery and a long rehabilitation process to regain his full strength.
“The injury had affected me both mentally and physically as I was not able to train at full capacity for about six months. What kept me going was being able to accept that I was injured and make sure I do my best to recover faster so that I could continue training normally as soon as possible,” shared Asher who found strength through his injuries.
Mikhail Haziq (Diploma in Sport Management, Year 3), who is also suffering from an injury, competed in one apparatus, and took the gold medal in the Pommel Horse of the senior category.
In the Rhythmic Gymnastics junior competition, Amelyn Sng Hui-En (Secondary 3) impressed the judges to take home 2 gold and 2 silver medals. Not far behind was batchmate Cleo Chew who took 1 gold and 1 silver. In the senior event, Sophia Ho Jin Wen (Secondary 4), Leah Chew (Diploma in Sport Management, Year 3) and Abie Chi (IBDP Year 5) added 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. The team won a total of 4 gold, 5 gold and 2 bronze medals from both categories.
The gymnasts will be gearing up for their annual National Championships in March 2022.
