From 5 to 15 November 2022, I was given the opportunity to travel with the Singapore Men’s National Water Polo team to Thailand for the Asian Water Polo Championships. The Asian Water Polo Championships will serve as a Qualification Tournament for FINA World Championships, Fukuoka 2023.
Our first match was against Kuwait on the 7th of November. We came out victorious for our first match with the final score of 17-8 in favour of us.
However, on the next day I fell ill. This made me absent in the match against Hong Kong. The team still won, with the final score of 11-19 in favour of us.
On the third day, I was able to recover fully to play in the match against Japan. Although having similar tactics coming into the match, Japan emerged victorious from the match against us. The final score was 6-22 in favour of Japan. I was able to score my first goal of the competition in this match in the second quarter.
The next two matches were not as smooth-sailing as we had expected it to be. We played a tough game against our China and Kazakhstan opponents. The final score was 25-6 in favour of Team China, and 18-8 in favour of Kazakhstan.
On the seventh day, we played against Thailand. Coming out victorious, we won with a score of 12-9. This allowed us to play in the 5th /6th placing match.
On our last day, we played against Korea in the 5th /6th placing match. With the final score being 14-7 in favour of Korea, our team emerged 6th place in the 2022 Asian Water Polo Championships.
The biggest takeaway from the competition is the importance of teamwork. Each player must work together to move the ball down the pool and score goals. Without teamwork, the game would be very difficult to play. I can see the team going higher in rankings with our cohesive efforts.
The experience from the competition has also played a crucial role in developing me as a player. The experience I have gained from my mistakes in the games has allowed me to correct my crucial errors. Thus allowed me to be a better player.
