Principal’s Message
Dear student-athletes, staff, parents, and friends
Happy New Year!
2023 ended aptly for Singapore Sports School with 3 newly minted World Champions. 17 past and present student-athletes have clinched world championship titles for their sports. The latest is Zeanne Law, our current student-athlete in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) who was crowned World Wushu Champion (Taijiquan). She is an inspiration to our current student-athletes to aim high and strive for their dreams in both sports and academic pursuits. She joined two other alumni, Jowen Lim, World Wushu Champion (Gunshu) and Darren Ong (Bowling), in the growing list of World Champions from Sports School.
2024 also started well with new furniture for our Boarders as they checked in on 1 January. Boarding and Estate staff have worked relentlessly to achieve the amazing feat of removing some 500 old furniture, making good the rooms and installing new ones, including new mattresses, over the entire Nov/Dec school holiday!
We have also made our school calendar public on our website so that parents and student-athletes can easily access information on major school events. The calendar is accessible at the following url: https://www.sportsschool.edu.sg/community/school-calendar. Do let us know what other information would be helpful to you.
2024 is also a significant milestone for the school as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary. As the only school in Singapore with the mission to nurture aspiring national athletes into learned champions with character: champions in sports, for sports, and in life, this is also a significant milestone for Singapore sports. A series of exciting events have been lined up for our celebration, including those that partner our alumni and the community. As we reflect on the good work of the school over the last 20 years, may we renew our strength and confidence to do even better, soaring to greater heights in the next decade; to be Deeply Rooted, Soaring High!
2024 is also the year for the Paris Summer Olympics happening in July/August. We wish our past and present student-athletes who have qualified and those who are still striving for a place, our best wishes! We will be rooting for you!
This year, the school will be adopting full subject-based banding for our new Secondary One student-athletes joining us. They will be placed in 4 classes (Sec 1A to 1D) comprising student-athletes from 2-4 sports academies. They will attend Character and Citizenship Education (CCE), Basic Sports Science and Applied Learning Programme lessons as a class but will attend lessons for the other subjects based on their strength and interest in the subject. We hope that this way of grouping for learning will help our student-athletes find greater joy, and take greater ownership of their learning, as well as learn from each other from different perspectives.
We also welcome Ms Teoh Zsin Woon, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Permanent Secretary (Development) in the Public Service Division, who is also the Chairman of our School Board, to this Sports School community.
May 2024 be a great year of reflection, celebration, and striving for greater heights as one school, as all our student-athletes, staff, parents, and partners, work closely together towards our shared goals of nurturing every student-athlete into a Learned Champion with Character.
Together, we will soar!
