Trackers Set New Records
New Zealand Combined Events Championships, 2024 Western Australia State Track & Field Championships
Lucas Fun Le Cong, who is making his mark in Decathlon, set a new Under-20 national record for Decathlon at the New Zealand U20 Combined Events Championships in Dunedin. He broke the 18-year-old national record after accumulating 6431 points across 10 events, surpassing the previous mark of 5504 points. His results have also earned him qualification for the Asian Junior Championships 2024.
The current IBDP Year 6 student-athlete first captured attention in 2023 when he clinched a bronze in the Decathlon at the Asian U18 Athletics Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Since then, he has displayed commitment and hard work and consistently improved his timings.
At the competition held from 17 to 18 February 2024, he attained 6 new personal bests across the 10 events he participated in, including 100m, Shot Put (6kg), 400m, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, and Javelin Throw.
Another promising student-athlete on the rise is Secondary 2 student-athlete Wilson Tan Shen Kai. Wilson participated in the 2024 Western Australia (WA) State Track & Field Championships in Perth from 23 to 26 February 2024. He bagged two medals – a silver for high jump and a bronze for long jump – and even achieved new personal bests in them! Wilson’s impressive 1.66m high jump and 5.35m long jump are his new personal records.
Alumna Tia Louise Rozario also leaped to two national records in women’s indoor triple and long jump at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships in Boston held from 22 to 24 February.
