Badminton Alumni Triumphed At India Open
YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2022
One month after alumnus Loh Kean Yew smashed his way to a historic victory at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships in Spain, Singapore Sports School’s alumni continued to show that Singaporean shuttlers are world-class. Alumni Terry Hee Yong Kai and Tan Wei Han had started the year on a high with their biggest win at the YONEX-SUNRISE India Open 2022. The 182nd-ranked pair claimed their Mixed Doubles title on 16 January 2022 after beating Malaysia’s world No. 40 pair 21-15, 21-18 in the 40-minute final.
This is the duo’s seventh title together but it is their first in a Super 500 tournament, the fourth tier of the BWF World Tour circuit.
“This win means so much to me because it is a result of all the dedication and hard work that we have been putting in,” said Wei Han in a Straits Times interview. The duo’s main target this year is to win a medal at the Southeast Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Also at the India Open, Kean Yew played out a tightly contested first set against India’s Lakshya Sen in the Men’s Singles final. He eventually wrapped up the 54-minute match in 24-22, 21-17, and settled for second place. His feat at the tournament saw a rise in his World Ranking from 15th to 12th place.
Alumna Yeo Jia Min and Loh Kean Hean were also at the tournament. Both halted at the quarter- finals, with Jia Min withdrawing from the tournament after going down with a fever.
