Bowling In The New Year With Good Results
Bowling – 35th Asian Intercity Championships and Secondary School League
In a striking display of skill and camaraderie, our bowlers delivered a pin-credible performance at the 35th Asian Intercity Bowling Championships in Taichung, Taiwan, from 8 to 12 January 2024. The dynamic quartet of Nura Salsabila, Lim Shi En, Nur Irdina Hazly, and Shirlene Wong emerged victorious, claiming the coveted 1st place in the Women’s Team event. Notably, Nur Irdina showcased her exceptional talent by securing a remarkable 2nd place in the Women’s Masters, while Nura demonstrated prowess with a 3rd place finish in the Women’s Singles. Additionally, Irdina and Shi En joined forces to clinch the 3rd spot in the Women’s Doubles competition.
When asked about her performance, Nur Irdina said, “There are definitely many things I could have done differently such as using a different ball or making adjustments target-wise. I didn't do these during the match at that moment as many different bowlers have already bowled on the pair of lanes and we weren't given practice throws. So, I had to mainly control the pocket rather than make many different adjustments to achieve a strike which may end up costing me the game even more.
To me, it was like every other team event I have competed in. There were dips in performance at times but we were able to maintain high spirits, putting the team first rather than ourselves and we ended up enjoying it and also winning the gold medal which was a bonus.”
Our Men’s Team, comprising of Brian Ngoi, Joshua Soo, Ryan Goi, and Josh Goh, also left an indelible mark by securing a podium finish with their outstanding 3rd place in the Men’s Team event. This stellar performance at the outset of the year sets a promising tone for the rest of the bowling season.
Our bowlers also competed in the Secondary School League 2024 held from 6 to 27 January 2024. In the Girls' Masters event, it was a 1-2 finish for Hazel Tan Rou En who clinched 1st place and her bowling buddy Rainie Kwek Xin Hwee who secured 2nd spot. In the Boys’ Masters category, Darius See Zhi Yun took home the champions trophy.
Congratulations to our bowlers for an impressive start and for bringing home well-deserved accolades!
