Class of 2023 Excel In Studies

IBDP and GCE O-Level Results Release

The year commenced triumphantly as the Class of 2023's International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) batch delivered stellar results. On January 3 2024, a record-breaking 29 student-athletes received their IBDP examination results, marking the largest cohort in the school since the programme's inception.

The Class of 2023 achieved 100% passes and high distinction rates across several subjects. About 60% of the 29 candidates scored at least 40 points out of a maximum of 45 points. 23 of them were National Youth Squad or National Team members during the course of their studies in Sports School. They took up the IBDP to continue pursuing sports seriously in an athlete-friendly environment while striving for academic excellence. More than half of them also achieved 40 points or more in the final examinations.

Among the recent graduates is Eleanor Quah Yu Wei, an artistic swimmer and valedictorian, who successfully juggled intensive training for the Asian Games, held a month before the final examinations, with her studies. Eleanor's exemplary self-discipline and time management skills were pivotal to her success, as reflected by her impressive score of 42 out of 45 points.

She shared, “I was genuinely surprised and happy because I didn't expect to perform well. Approaching my IB exams, I felt inadequately prepared as I was training intensively. In fact, I continued training up until just 20 days before the exams.” Eleanor aspires to join a good university, either in the UK or Singapore, with the intention of pursuing studies in fields such as Law, PPE, or Political Science, and hopes to get scholarship offers.

A week after the IBDP results release, the attention turned to the GCE O-Levels, where 19 student-athletes received their results on 11 January 2024. All 19 recent graduates qualified for entry into Polytechnics, showcasing their commitment to academic excellence alongside their sporting endeavours.

Ice skater Ryo Ong Yik, who recently represented Singapore in the Winter Youth Olympics, was one of the recent GCE O-Levels graduates. He lived in Busan, Korea, for a year and took part in the 2023 ISU World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships in January 2023, where he finished 27th out of 63 skaters and qualified for the Winter Youth Olympics. After participating in the World Cup, he moved back to Singapore and had to catch up with studies to take his GCE O-Levels at the end of the year. Similarly, footballer Sky Yeo Sze Kai and tracker Bevlyn Koh Shi Xuan were recognised for juggling their sporting commitments and studies.

Singapore Sports School is extremely proud of the Class of 2023 for working hard and being committed to achieving excellence in sports and studies. We wish them all the best for their future!
