Golfers swung into back-to-back action on the greens at local and international competitions in July.

It was an exciting month for alumnae Inez Ng and Hailey Loh Suanne, who were fellow competitors at local competitions. At the 11th Warren-Uniforce Amateur Open from 13 to 15 July 2022, the two strong golfers were neck and neck. Hailey started the final day with a 3-stroke lead. However, she was set back by a difficult hole. The lead swung over to Inez Ng by hole 9, who became the eventual winner with a 2-stroke victory. She scored a 3-under 201. Jillian Kuk Jia Lin (IBDP Year 5) continued her recovery from an injury lay-off to secure 4th place while her brother Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong (Alumnus) and Nathen Tan En Quen (Diploma in Business, Year 3) managed 6th and 8th respectively, in the boys’ category.

When Inez and Hailey met yet again at the 74th Singapore Open Amateur Championship just three days later, it was Hailey who shone at the competition with an international field. She was the top Singaporean performer, clinching yet another 2nd place standing in the women’s competition.

Hailey was the title winner for the same event last year in a field of mainly local players due to the pandemic. Though she did not retain the title, Hailey is satisfied with her performance. She scored five-over 293 in total. Hailey acknowledged that her Malaysian opponent Mirabel Ting who finished 16 strokes ahead, was a worthy winner. The 19-year-old believes that her win proves that she is heading in the right direction towards her goals for the 2023 SEA Games. She shared in an interview with The Straits Times, "My game is definitely going in the right direction. I'm definitely hitting a bit longer, which is great, my putting has improved too... everything all around, has improved a little."

This time, Inez Ng came in 7th, while Jillian Kuk registered a good 9th- position-finish. Alumnus Justin Kuk was not to be outdone, emerging as the top Singaporean male golfer to tie for 10th place. This earned Justin a coveted spot in the inaugural Asian Tour International Series, Singapore leg from 11-14 August 2022.

Meanwhile, another group of golfers had a fruitful experience at overseas competitions. Secondary 2 golfer Chen Xingtong participated in the R&A Golf Championship in Scotland from 8 to 17 July. This meet brings together top juniors from around the world and does not separately rank the golfers by gender. Although she had to deal with unfamiliar blustery conditions, she brilliantly made the cut and finished 59th on a 21 over par 237 strokes. The top girl, hailing from England, finished 11th. Xingtong finished 22nd among female golfers.

Her senior, Jaymie Ng Wan Xin (IBDP Year 5), also competed against an international field at the FCG International Championship from 1 to 7 July, before she joined her sister Denise Ng, and schoolmates Chloe Ng Ker Ee (Secondary 2) and Irvyn Tan Sheng Kang (Diploma in Business, Year 3), at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships from 12-15 July, in the United States. Though they did not make the cut, they gained invaluable lessons playing amongst the best junior golfers in the world. Jaymie also did well to finish 3rd in the US Girls’ Junior qualifiers on 27 June to qualify for the main tournament which took place 18-23 July where she missed the cut.

Chloe later took part in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in Florida held from 19-24 July. She found herself up against 50 golfers from an international field of more than 10 countries. Chloe held consistent throughout the 54 holes, registering 4-over each day to finish 12-over on 228 strokes. This tied her for a creditable 5th place with a Peruvian golfer.
