Contrasting Wins For Loy Siblings
STTA – Toa Payoh West – Thomson CSN Youth Table Tennis Championships
Our paddlers dominated the inaugural STTA - Toa Payoh West - Thomson CSN Youth Table Tennis Championships held from 5 to 9 July 2023. It was the first local age group competition for our paddlers this year and they gave it their all to ensure their places on the podium in all events. Among the winners were siblings Loy Xing Yao and Loy Ming Ying, who won the Under-15 Boys' and Under-15 Girls' titles respectively.
Xing Yao went through a more challenging route to clinch first place. In the quarter-final match, he faced Sports School teammate Ellsworth Le and went on a 5-set stretch when Ellsworth came back from being 2 sets down to tie the match in the 4th set. However, Xing Yao knuckled down and won the final set 11-6 to advance.
In the semi-final, Xing Yao again needed an extended run of 4 sets to beat his opponent Aron Ng 11-9, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7. It set up an all Sports School final when Xing Yao faced Zhou Jinghe. The duo did not disappoint the crowd watching as they tried to better each other point for point. Xing Yao took the first 2 sets but Jinghe rallied himself to stage a comeback in the 3rd set. He rose to Xing Yao’s challenge and edged him 16-14 in that set. Xing Yao did not succumb to the pressure and composed himself to win the final set 11-8 and was crowned champion.
His sister Loy Ming Ying, on the other hand, was a force to reckon with in the Under-15 Girls category. Other than a little scare in the semi-final match when she lost the first set 10-12, she swiped aside her competitors in the previous quarter-final match and in the sets that followed – overpowering her opponents in straight sets.
Jayden Tan Kai Yang and Chloe Lai Neng Huen were the other 2 winners in the Under-19 categories.
