Table Tennis Starlets Captured Podium Finishes
28th Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships, WTT Youth Contender San Francisco II 2024
Rising stars Loy Ming Ying and Ser Lin Qian shone brightly at the 28th Asian Youth Table Tennis Championships, held in Chongqing, China from 30 June to 6 July 2024, securing Singapore’s first medals at the competition since 2019.
Loy Ming Ying began her campaign on 4 July 2024, facing a Korean opponent in the U15 Girls’ Singles. Despite losing the first set, Ming Ying swiftly regained her composure, sealing a commanding 3-1 victory in the Round of 16. The Secondary 2 student-athlete progressed to the quarter-finals where she encountered a formidable Chinese opponent.
After a challenging start, Ming Ying staged a comeback in the final three sets, triumphing 3-2 and advancing to the semi-finals against another Chinese opponent. Despite a valiant effort, Ming Ying settled for a joint-bronze, showcasing her exceptional skills against some of the world’s top players.
"Getting a medal at the Asian Youth Championships was beyond my expectations. I intend to continue improving on my skills for future competitions. I would like to thank STTA, SSP, my coach, my team and my family for supporting me on this journey," shared Ming Ying.
In the Under-19 Girls’ Doubles, Ser Lin Qian and her partner, Tan Zhao Yun, shared similar fate. They progressed through the Round of 16 with a 3-1 victory, securing a spot in the quarter-finals where they defeated Chinese opponents 3-2. However, their Chinese opponents in the semi-finals proved too strong, resulting in a joint-bronze for the Singaporean pair.
Ming Ying continued her fine form at the WTT Youth Contender San Francisco II 2024, held from 22 to 25 July 2024, showcasing remarkable skill and resilience in the Under-15 Girls’ Singles, while Janelle Chiang earned the second spot. Chloe Lai also performed strongly, clinching a joint-3rd in the Under-19 Singles event and a first place in the Mixed Doubles with schoolmate Ellsworth Le. Sonia Abbas Zainudeen and Jaryl Wong Yi Zhong did equally well, securing a joint-3rd in the U15 and U19 Mixed Doubles respectively. In total, the Sports School team amassed a total of 6 podium finishes in the competition.
Our paddlers continued their winning streak at the 2024 Silicon Valley Open, where they secured an impressive 13 medals from 26 to 28 July 2024. Sonia Abbas Zainudeen shone brightly, earning 3 gold medals in the U1900, U2050, and Under-13 Girls' Singles events. In the U17 Boys’ Singles, Yang Ze Yi, Nicholas Tan and Ellsworth Le impressed the crowd with a 1-2-3 finish. Meanwhile, Loy Ming Ying and Chloe Lai Neng Huen excelled in the Under-17 Girls' Singles, winning gold and bronze, respectively.
Buoyed by their success, Ming Ying went on to take home a bronze in the Under-19 Girls’ Singles, while Nicholas and Ellsworth finished 2nd and 3rd in the Under-19 Boys Singles. Additionally, the Mixed Doubles teams – Ellsworth Le and Chloe Lai Neng Huen, as well as Nicholas Tan and Loy Ming Ying – displayed excellent teamwork to score a 2-3 finish in the Under-19 event.
