Encouragement Awards Recognises Young Talents
Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Encouragement Awards
77 student-athletes received a boost as they were recognised as promising talents to receive the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF)-Peter Lim Encouragement Awards. The Encouragement Awards are given to young student-athletes to motivate them to continue striving for excellence in sports.
Singapore tycoon Peter Lim started giving out scholarships in 2011 to encourage and support young student-athletes. In 2019, he renewed his commitment by pledging another $10 million to fund the scholarship till 2030. In the last two years, Encouragement Awards have been given out instead of scholarships due to the change in selection criteria as the pandemic halted local and international competitions.
This year, 19 beneficiaries will receive the Encouragement Award in the High-Performance category. They include five 31st SEA Games participants – Max Lee Shen Oon (Diving), Si To Jian Tong, Simon Lee Renjie (both Fencing), Low Yu Yenn (Gymnastics), and Zoe Tan Ziyi (Wushu).
Zoe Tan Ziyi, who came in 2nd in the combined Women’s Daoshu and Gunshu at her debut SEA Games recently, is relieved that she has received additional support. The first-year Diploma in Business Studies student-athlete expressed her thoughts: “To be in competitive sports, I need to make sure I get myself the right equipment and gear for trainings and competitions. These items are pretty costly. On top of that, my mother uses the funds to ensure I have a balanced nutrition and beef myself up with supplements. This year's scholarship is very timely for me! I spent quite a bit on costumes, shoes and weapons for the recent SEA Games as it was my 1st international games after two long COVID-hit years!”
