Golfers Swing To Victory At Tournaments
Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2022, 2nd National Ranking Game, US Girls’ Junior Championship Qualifiers
Facing a strong pool of 40 international competitors from 10 countries at the Singapore Junior Golf Championship 2022, Jaymie Ng Wan Xin (IBDP Year 5) kept her cool to clinch the overall and ‘A’ Division championship title. Jaymie, who finished second in the championship last year, was also the first Singaporean to win the overall Girls' title since 2011.
On the last day of the competition held from 7 to 9 June, the newly-minted champion had initially found herself struggling with 3 strokes behind her two closest competitors – Indonesia’s Rayi Geulis Zullandari and Thailand’s Navaporn Soontreeyapas. Rayi went on to complete the day with a blistering 7-under 65, the best round of the entire tournament, while Jaymie gritted her teeth to sink 4 birdies on the return 9 holes. All square going into hole 18, Navaporn nervously bogeyed to leave Jaymie needing a par 4 to win, which she duly obliged with little nerves despite the onlooking crowd. With a total of 215 strokes, Jaymie eventually took the overall and ‘A’ Division championship title, one ahead of both closest challengers who tied for silver.
Jaymie attributed her success to the exposure she gained competing internationally in the last one-and-a-half years. "I have struggled a lot, especially at the start of the year when I went to Australia for a few tournaments and did not finish strongly. I think it was then that I learnt how to keep my cool throughout the round and finish strongly, and I managed to do so during the final round of this championship," shared Jaymie in an interview with The Straits Times.
Meanwhile, Secondary 2 student-athlete Chen Xingtong registered a 7-over 223 to clinch the Girls’ ‘B’ Division title and ranked 8th overall, while newly-enrolled batchmate Chloe Ng Ker Ee took the third place and ranked 16th overall. Both Xingtong and Jaymie also teamed up to emerge second in the team event. Their successful outing at the championship was a confidence booster as Xingtong and Chloe continued their winning streak in the 2nd National Ranking Game, while Jaymie earned herself a place in the 73rd US Girls’ Junior Championship.
At the 2nd National Ranking Game which took place at Changi Golf Club from 13 to 15 June, Xingtong and Chloe were undeterred by rainy conditions coupled with scorching heat throughout the three rounds. Development Squad player Xingtong emerged champion with a 73, 74 while Junior Squad player Chloe tied for a second-place with National Squad player Shang Yu with 72, 79.
Jaymie, on the other hand, headed to the United States (US) for a month-long stint, starting with the US Girls’ Junior Championship Qualifiers. Nearly 2,000 junior golfers vie for the championship. Jaymie, who came in 3rd in her qualifying round, made it to the starting field of 156 competitors. Her sister Denise Ng Wan Xuan also took part in the qualifiers but did not make the cut. The 73rd US Girls’ Junior Championship will be held from 18 to 23 July.
