Paddlers Served Up Strong Performance In Tournaments
26th SEA Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships 2022, SAFRA X STTA Table Tennis Championships 2022, WTT Youth Contender Zagreb 2022, 12th SEA Table Tennis Championships 2022
The June holidays was not a month to rest for our paddlers as they continued to spring into intense competitive action at several tournaments. They were able to exhibit their table tennis skills against their strong opponents and serve up incredible results, both locally and internationally.
Back home where the SAFRA X STTA Table Tennis Championships was held from 4 to 12 June 2022, the U15 Boys’ proved to be a formidable squad as they dominated the Singles event, with all 6 paddlers reaching the quarter-finals and eventually sweeping all medals on offer. Nicholas Tan (Secondary 3) and Ellsworth Le (Secondary 2) won the gold and silver medal respectively, and Secondary 2 batchmates Zhou Jinghe and Loy Xing Yao finished joint-3rd.
Nicholas and Ellsworth, who teamed up with Yang Ze Yi (Secondary 3) for the Men’s Team event, also performed excellently to finish third out of 70 teams. Similarly, Chloe Lai Neng Huen (Secondary 3) and Rhiannon Tey Yu Qian (Secondary 2) came in joint-3rd among the U15 Girls.
In the U19 Singles events, Secondary 4 student-athlete Koh Junhao was runners-up in his first attempt at the Boys’ event. In the Girls’ event, first-year Diploma in Business Studies student-athlete Janissa Cheng Yoke Ning reached the finals but settled for silver after a narrow loss, while alumna Cassandra Chew Jing Wen finished third.
The paddlers continued their fine form to take on opponents from the Southeast Asia region. At the 26th SEA Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championships that was held in Bangkok, Thailand from 17 to 22 June, Sports School paddlers formed 10 out of the 16-strong Singapore contingent, and took home 9 (3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze) out of the 12 medals (4 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze) won by Team Singapore.
In the Cadet events, Ellsworth Le, Loy Xing Yao, Nicholas Tan and Yang Ze Yi were part of the Boys’ team that won the team gold medal, while Chloe Lai was part of the Girls’ team that won the team gold. Chloe also performed well in the Girls’ doubles event where she took the bronze medal with partner Loy Ming Ying.
The limelight of the tournament was in the all-Singapore and all-Sports School Cadet Boys’ Doubles finals. Nicholas Tan teamed up with Yang Ze Yi to edge out Ellsworth Le and Loy Xing Yao, and won the gold medal with a convincing score of 3-0. Ellsworth Le and Loy Xing Yao also punched above their weight in the Cadet Boys’ Singles event to add a silver and bronze respectively to the medal tally.
In the Junior events, Andy Wong Yan Kai (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 3), Jayden Tan Kai Yang (Secondary 3), Janissa Cheng Yoke Ning and Ser Lin Qian (Secondary 4) were part of the Boys’ and Girls’ team who contributed a silver in the team events.
Meanwhile, Secondary 4 student-athlete Izaac Quek Yong, and alumni Clarence Chew Zhe Yu, Koen Pang Yew En, Goi Rui Xuan, Wong Xin Ru, and Zhou Jingyi also had four days of adrenaline-filled action at the WTT Contender in Zagreb, Croatia. The tournament held from 13 to 19 June 2022 saw the gathering of top table tennis players eager to test their skills and rise in ranking points.
Despite not medalling in the WTT Contender, the team was able to pick themselves up and adjust quickly in the 12th Southeast Asian Table Tennis Championship in Bangkok, Thailand. The team, together with alumni Beh Kun Ting, Ethan Poh and Zhang Wanling, formed 9 out of the 11-member Singapore contingent. They contributed to all 11 medals – 3 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze won by Team Singapore. Clarence contributed to 3 golds in the Singles and Doubles events where he teamed up with Ethan in the Men’s Doubles, and Zeng Jian in the Mixed Doubles.
