Shuttlers Serve Up Results During June Holidays
Badminton Brave Sword Series and Pilot Pen Badminton Championships 2022
The June holidays served up a healthy dose of competition for our shuttlers, and they rose to the challenges admirably, racking up victories and medals along the way.
First on the calendar was the Brave Sword Badminton Series 2022, which was held from 6 to 12 June 2022. Ace shuttlers Chua Min Han (Secondary 4), Nge Joo Jin (Secondary 4), Lai Yi Ting (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1) and Safin Noor Azlan (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1) showed their badminton prowess and each of them won gold for two separate events.
The highlight of the competition was four Secondary 1 student-athletes who made it an all-Sports School finals in the Under-15 Girls’ Doubles. Duo Sophie Aleena Likwan and Loh Ying Fang recorded a victory over the other ace pair Jeanna Low Rui Xuan and Sherayne Ong Xuan En to make it a 1-2 finish for Sports School.
Later, the four Girls’ Doubles winners took part in the Pilot Pen Badminton Championships held from 13 to 19 June 2022 at the Temasek Club with three of their batchmates. Similar to the previous competition, the Under-14 Girls’ Doubles teams dominated the competition and swept medals of all colours. This time, it was Jeanna’s turn to win the doubles title with her partner, while Sophie was one half of the doubles team that placed second. Sheryane teamed up with Loh Ying Fang and came in 3rd place. Jayden Fan Ze Lin won another gold for Team Sports School in the Under-14 Boys’ Singles. In total, Sports School made 8 podium finishes in all 4 categories that it played in.
Sports School’s badminton coach Shinta Mulia Sari shared, “The players knew my expectations of them prior to this competition. I told them that everyone has the right to win and to be successful in sports, just fight all the way and believe in your own ability. Even though they are in Secondary 1 and only had six months to prepare themselves for this and other competitions, they performed very well and I am happy that they made the podium as a team. Their wins also gave them the confidence to know where they stand and continue building on this foundation to excel further in the future.”
