Singapore Swimming Association Sets Up Second National Training Centre At Sports School
Second Swimming National Training Centre
The Singapore Swimming Association has collaborated with Singapore Sports School to set up a second National Training Centre (NTC) at its Woodlands campus. The expansion of its high-performance base aims to serve a bigger community of swimmers who aspire to become national athletes.
The second NTC at Sports School will enhance accessibility to quality training with dedicated NTC coaches, especially for those who stay in the northern region. Swimmers who are not studying in Sports School can train at its indoor swimming pool and receive more response support from sport scientists from Singapore Sports Institute and National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI), which is housed within the Sports School campus. They may even enjoy boarding facilities within the Sports School campus to support their training.
Gary Tan, National Head Coach, Singapore Swimming Association, shared, “Singapore Swimming Association is excited to partner up with Singapore Sports School to establish our second National Training Centre. We are very thankful that our swimming clubs have continued to develop and groom pipeline swimmers for Singapore. Together with the clubs, the second NTC will look to support a bigger community of swimmers who aspire toward the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games. With the right facilities and software that is embedded in Sports School’s system, we are then able to focus our attention on getting our athletes closer to their Olympic dream. Therefore, this partnership is one that would serve a bigger purpose in creating sustainable success for our ecosystem. I would like to thank Sports School for having this shared vision with us, on bringing our swimming community closer to the Olympic dream.”
Mr Ong Kim Soon, Principal of Singapore Sports School, added, “As a national institution dedicated to nurturing potential national athletes, Singapore Sports School is pleased to be a strategic partner with Singapore Swimming Association, together with the Singapore Sports Institute and National Youth Sports Institute, to ensure the best support for our national swimmers and potential ones. The establishment of a National Training Centre at Singapore Sports School is one important step to support national swimmers to achieve their international swimming goals as they train at the new NTC, with the opportunity of staying in boarding, and even studying in Sports School.”
Athletes can apply to the NTC at Sports School via three pathways, namely the Major Games pathway, the Performance pathway, and the Singapore Sports School pathway. Under the Major Games pathway, a swimmer must record a time at an event that surpasses SEA Games qualifying standard. To qualify to enroll under the Performance pathway, the swimmer must have a minimum of 650 FINA ranking points across any event. The Sports School pathway requires a swimmer to join the school in its secondary or post-secondary programme as a student-athlete.
