10 post-secondary student-athletes in Singapore Sports School’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and polytechnic diploma programmes had an enriching experience at Pre-University Seminar 2024. The Seminar, co-organised by the Ministry of Education and Dunman High School, attracted 565 student participants from 30 pre-university institutions. Themed ‘Forging Our Way Forward’, the Seminar was an excellent platform for students to discuss Singapore's development, national identity, and values in the face of global complexities.

The Seminar included dialogue sessions with experts from the people, private, public, and academic sectors, as well as learning journeys and panel discussions to deepen students’ understanding of their chosen sub-themes. On the final day of the Seminar, students had to showcase their proposals for their vision for SG75.

While the actual Seminar was from 27 May to 30 May 2024, pre-preparations started during the March holidays with a session at Dunman High School on 9 March 2024. Student-athletes also began discussions with their teams since the kick-off session in March.

Shooter Jaden Neo Yu Zhen from the Diploma in Business programme was part of the group that delved into bringing sports to greater heights. He shared, “Attending the Pre-University Seminar 2024 was a transformative experience, enhancing my expertise in sports and team collaboration while exposing me to real-world challenges. Engaging in diverse activities, from listening to influential speakers to participating in team bonding, broadened my perspectives and forged lasting friendships. Key takeaways included insights into Singapore's sporting culture and the future impact of AI on various professions. Despite initial challenges in finalising ideas, our group successfully developed our project. Overall, the Seminar pushed me out of my comfort zone, enriched my network, and motivated me to pursue new opportunities.”

Tracker Abdul Raqib Abdul Razak, also from the same course, said, “The 2024 Singapore Pre-University Seminar was more than just an academic exercise; it was a catalyst for change. It empowered young minds like us to think critically about forging our way forward and encouraged innovative thinking. The experiences and lessons learned during the Seminar will undoubtedly influence the participants’ future endeavours, inspiring them to become leaders in the future.”

Victoria Chua, an IBDP Year 5 student-athlete, also had a similar experience. She shared, “I learnt how to effectively convey my ideas and collaborate with a large group. I have also managed to adopt a critical mindset due to the multiple panel discussions, allowing me to think deeply about the problems Singapore is facing.”
