Gymnasts Dazzle At Singapore Open
Singapore Gymnastics Open Championships
The annual 2024 Singapore Open, held from 23 May to 2 June 2024, attracted gymnasts from regional nations, raising the competitiveness of the local event. Despite the stiff competition, gymnasts in Team Sports School bagged a slew of medals after showcasing their skills and talents during the three-day competition.
In rhythmic gymnastics, the junior athletes led the charge with Secondary 3 gymnast Thea Chew claiming the prestigious Individual All-Around title, marking a successful return following her participation in the Asian Championships. Leia Yap, also in Secondary 2, captured the bronze medal, while Tina Liew Xin Yu, another standout from the team, finished fourth overall and clinched a gold in the Clubs event. The senior rhythmic gymnasts faced tough competition, narrowly missing podium finishes in the All-Around category.
Our male junior artistic gymnasts received a massive boost from the competition. Secondary 3 gymnast Xavier Pang Sheng Wei who missed the Asian Championships selection due to a wrist injury, proved that he is on a full road to recovery. He clinched top honours in the All-Around and Floor Exercise, with more medals in the High Bar and Rings. Nathanael Pek Sek Kai from Secondary 3 finished closely behind him in 2nd place for Individual All-Around and grabbed the gold medal for Pommel Horse. Jovi Loh Jia Le who won Singapore’s historic medal in the Asian Championships, cemented his spot by winning gold in the Rings and Parallel Bars event. Aiken Tang Bing Heng was also garlanded with a gold medal for High Bar and bronze in Vault. Newly-converted senior gymnast Asher Pua, who is in the Diploma in Business Studies programme, took silver in the Pommel Horse event.
