Striking Gold: Colleen Pee's Path In Bowling And Education
Student Feature – Colleen Pee
At the tender age of 9, Colleen Pee found herself stepping into the cool, air-conditioned comfort of a bowling alley. Little did she know that this environment, chosen for its climate control, would become the arena where she would shine.
"I started bowling when I was 9 years old. Initially, I started bowling because it is an air-conditioned sport. But what got me to be more serious was my sister who inspired me to get the ball rolling down the lanes," she recalls with a smile.
Colleen's journey began at St. Margaret Primary School, where she laid the foundation for both her academic and athletic pursuits. Describing herself as an introvert who is always up for new challenges and adaptable, Colleen embodies the resilience and flexibility that are essential for success both in sports and in life.
The past year has been particularly rewarding for Colleen, who has received numerous accolades for her achievements in bowling and academics. The 2023 Sportsgirl of the Year winner was also part of the women’s bowling team that was named Team of the Year (Event) at the recent 2024 Singapore Sports Awards for their exceptional performance at the 2023 World Bowling Championships. At the 54th Singapore International Open held in June this year, she bowled her way to the top and was crowned Champion in the Women’s Open category.
"Receiving recognition for both my sports and studies this year has been truly amazing. I can't help but to feel grateful for the incredible support that I've received from my loved ones, family, friends, teammates, coaches, lecturers, sponsors, Singapore Sports Institute, and fans who have been there for me in every step of my journey. Winning awards is definitely an honour, but it also serves as a reminder of the responsibility that I have to keep pushing myself to always be a better version of myself every day," she says.
Colleen's educational journey is as impressive as her sporting achievements. Having completed the secondary program at Sports School, she went on to pursue her studies at the ITE College Central. There, she completed a Nitec in Fitness Training over two years and a Higher Nitec in Sports Management in one year. Reflecting on her decision to return to Sports School for a diploma program, Colleen cited three primary reasons.
"Firstly, I believe pursuing a diploma at Singapore Sports School will provide me with a supportive environment. Being surrounded by like-minded peers, supportive lecturers, and experienced coaches help to foster a conducive environment to balance both my sport and study. The Singapore Sports School community understands the unique challenges and opportunities faced by student-athletes, provides the necessary resources and encouragement to thrive both on and off the field.
Secondly, it aligns with my long-term goals. Pursuing the diploma programme will equip me with the tools and qualifications needed to pursue further education or career opportunities beyond my athletic career. By investing in my education now, I am laying a solid foundation for future success and personal fulfilment.
Last but not least, the customised diploma programme at Singapore Sports School is designed to empower athletes like myself to achieve their full potential, balancing academic excellence with athletic prowess and preparing us for success in all aspects of life."
In the upcoming months, Colleen's primary goal is to win the team gold medal at the IBF World Youth Championships 2024 in Korea. Long-term, she aims to continue growing as an athlete, improving her skills, and representing Team Singapore in major competitions such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, World Championships, and the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA).
For younger bowlers looking up to her, Colleen offers a piece of advice, "Never put a limit on your own abilities. Because if others have faith in you, you should believe and have faith in yourself and your abilities."
Colleen Pee's journey as a dedicated bowler and diligent student-athlete is nothing short of inspiring. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the support of a loving community.
