2019 North Zone School Badminton Championships
"You are all wearing my favourite team jersey! I miss wearing this jersey. I felt so much pride wearing it. The National Schools Badminton Championships was where I started. When I was your age, this was the biggest tournament of my life. I enjoyed it because the competition really pushed me and stretched me. I wish you all the best in your upcoming matches. Enjoy!"
Singapore Sports School badminton alumnus Loh Kean Yew, who defeated 2-time Olympic Champion and 5-time World Champion Lin Dan in a World Tour final in January 2019, said to his juniors competing in the 2019 North Zone School Badminton Championships. Just as the Badminton Academy had swept four Championship titles while he was a student-athlete, Singapore’s top national shuttler was confident that his juniors would do the same.
Kean Yew was at Montfort Secondary School on 6 March 2019 to offer encouragement to the “B” and “C” Boys ahead of their North Zone finals. Youth Olympian Jaslyn Hooi Yue Yann who had competed in the Buenos Aires 2018 edition was also present to cheer on the girls’ teams in the finals held at Sports School’s Badminton Hall a day after.
After 39 matches in the “B” and “C” Boys and Girls Divisions, Sports School Badminton Academy student-athletes took home four overall titles at the North Zone Championships which began on 18 January. The boys triumphed in all games, concluding the final against Maris Stella High School and Canberra Secondary School in the “B” and “C” Divisions with a clean slate. Meanwhile, the girls emerged the victor in a Sports School-Singapore Chinese Girls’ School final. The shuttlers continue their exploits in the national round ending 16 April.
