Justin Leads Ranks; Brandon, Wei Jin Top 3 In Youth Challenge

2020 HSBC Youth Golf Challenge (3rd Leg) cum National Ranking Game

Over three days from 16 to 18 March 2021, national senior and youth golfers had an opportunity to put their training to the test at the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 2020 (3rd Leg) cum National Ranking Game.

Justin Kuk Zheng Zhong had a strong start to the tournament, sinking five birdies to open with 3-under 69 strokes on the first round at Seletar Country Club. Despite going into the second round with a three-stroke lead, the Singapore Sports School post-secondary student-athlete’s Round 2 score of 2-over 74 strokes proved insufficient for him to maintain the lead after a solid performance by national squad teammate Sean Lee, who carded a tournament low score of 5-under 67 to take over the leaderboard by four strokes.

Maintaining calm and composure, Justin came back strong in the final round lead with a total of 2-under 214 strokes. He was the only player in the tournament to finish in the reds at the end of three rounds.

“My biggest challenge was dealing with the expectations that I have for myself. I had to constantly tell myself to stay in the present and enjoy being out there. I attribute my success to how I managed myself on the course over the three days by playing percentage golf. I made sure that I stuck to my game plan and managed my emotions for the majority of the tournament,” said the student-athlete from Sports School’s customised Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management programme.

National teammate Brandon Han Zhen Guang, a Diploma in Business Studies Year 2 student-athlete, shot 5-over 221 strokes. His score placed him fourth in the NRG men’s division and 2nd in the HSBC YGC Male Division A event. Year 6 student-athlete in IBDP Eng Wei Jin rounded up the podium finishers in the youth event’s A Division.

IBDP Year 6’s Inez Ng Xin Yi finished third in the NRG’s female event.
