Maximillian Ang, Team Sports School Set New Record

2021 Liberty Insurance Singapore National Age Group Invitational Finals and Major Qualifiers

After a long hiatus from competitive swimming, Singapore Sports School’s swimmers were all geared up for five days of swimming action at Liberty Insurance 51st Singapore National Age Group Invitational Finals and Major Qualifiers. Held from 17 to 23 March 2021, they proved that they were still on form as their excellent timings made it Sports School’s best showing yet at SNAG in the last five years.

All swimmers who qualified for SNAG came in Top 24, with nearly half of them finishing Top 8 in their respective events. Team Sports School concluded the event with 11 podium finishes.

A highlight at the competition was Maximillian Ang Wei’s feat of lowering his own national record in his pet event – the Men’s 200m Breaststroke. Maximillian, who is a Year 3 student-athlete in the Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management course offered with Republic Polytechnic, set a new national record of 2 minutes 13.68 seconds which secured him a spot at the 2021 Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the end of the year. He also earned himself an Olympic Games “B” mark on the penultimate day of competition. He last set a national record in the same event at the 2019 SEA Games in Philippines.

“There is no 100% but doing my best is the most important. It is always good to break your personal best and national record, so I feel happy about it. I want to continue to inspire the younger ones and encourage them to do their best,” shared Maximillian. Maximillian, who returned with bronze medal for the Men’s 200m Breaststroke event at the last SEA Games, is eyeing a gold medal at this year’s edition.

Other exciting moment at the competition was when Clydi Chan (IBDP Year 5), Trina Ling (Secondary 4) and Candice Ang Ruo Han (DBS Year 2) powered their way to a 1-2-3 finish for the Women’s 400m Individual Medley.

Secondary 2 student-athlete Kayley Shi En Goh was also awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) for her age-group. She said, “I felt very elated when I got recognised as the MVP. As last year’s SNAG was cancelled, this would be my first major competition and it is heartening to know that I have what it takes to do well. I have been training very hard for the last year, and I am glad that my hard work has paid off.”
