17 Footballers Kick Off Their 2022 SPL Season
Current Student-Athletes in Singapore Premier League Football Clubs
The 27th edition of the AIA Singapore Premier League 2022 (SPL) kicked off on 25 February 2022, with eight clubs set to play 28 matches each. This time, 17 current student-athletes in through-train programmes are playing for local football clubs in the SPL.
Among them is Muhammad Hilman Norhisam, a first-year Diploma in Business student-athlete in Albirex Niigata Football Club (FC). Hilman received a surprising call from Albirex less than a year ago expressing their interest to sign him up in the team. He grabbed the opportunity without hesitation as it has been his dream to join their team. He made his debut last year against the Young Lions when he came in as a substitute. Hilman made his first SPL start on the opening day against Tanjong Pagar United. Though Albirex had a shaky start to their SPL season with a loss against Tanjong Pagar United, Hilman feels undefeated.
The 17-year-old passionate footballer is still in disbelief that he made it to his dream team. He shared, “Till this day, I cannot believe it. It’s such a privilege to train and play alongside experienced players like Lee Tadanari, who is well-known in Japan.”
The future is bright for the young footballer, and he appreciates Singapore Sports School for providing him with a solid foundation and good support to realise his dream. As a 10-year-old, when Hilman watched his two older brothers play a Centre of Excellence game against Sports School, he vividly remembers how professional and united the players were on and off the pitch. It left a lasting impression, and deep interest to join Sports School to further his football development. On his Sports School experience, Hilman shared, “The training at Sports School since I was in Secondary 1 is the reason why I am doing well till this day. The intensity, the focus on every detail, and if I had any questions in terms of training, I can approach the coach without having to think twice. The environment made this place (Sports School) home for me and made me want to improve better as a player.”
