36 swimmers plunged into competitive action at the 52nd Singapore National Age Group Major Games (SNAG) Qualifier 2022. Over the six-day competition held from 15 to 20 March 2022, a total of 15 medals (5 golds, 3 silvers and 7 bronzes) and a whopping 161 personal best timings were captured by swimmers.

Vivienne Chew En and Har Mint (both Secondary 2) stood out from the crowd. Vivienne achieved 16 personal best timings in 9 events, while Har Mint scored 9 personal best timings in 10 events. Carol Rachmadi (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 1) and Artyom Lukasevits (Diploma in Business Studies, Year 2) also made a splash at the competition, capturing 9 personal best timings in 6 events and 11 personal best timings in 8 events respectively. Two others who shone in the competition are Azlina Mastamam (Secondary 1) and Manda Low Zi Qi (Secondary 3) who achieved 7 personal best timings in 7 events and 9 personal best timings in 6 events respectively.

“For me, this year’s SNAG has been a very fulfilling one. I managed to execute my race plan well and achieved 9 new personal best timings. I personally feel that this meet was a breakthrough as it was my first time being able to make it to the ‘B’ Finals in all 6 events that I participated in. I am very thankful to my family, friends, coaches and General Manager who supported and prepared me for and during my races,” shared Manda. Azlina, who joined Sports School in January 2022, also felt a significant improvement in her timing. She said: “The Individual Medley-based training allows me to train on all four strokes and better my swimming abilities. Although training is harder than my club training, it was enjoyable, and I was delighted to see an improvement in my timing and the way I swim.”

SNAG was also a memorable experience for Elyza Melinda Mak (Secondary 4). The competition has trained her mental strength to take on the stress and challenges better. “I had my first disqualification (DQ) in my 50m butterfly event. I was upset after my swim because I did feel myself move on the blocks before I dived in. However, that did not stop me from doing well in my other events. I am very grateful to the wonderful team who comforted me and cheered for me throughout the meet. We encouraged one another, laugh and help each other in every training. I am really thankful to have teammates and coaches who are able to help me get through tough times and push me to the best that I can be,” shared Elyza who participated in 7 events and captured 7 personal best timings.

Trina Ling Sze Yi (IBDP, Year 5), who won a bronze in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley and six personal best timings, also gained invaluable experience from the meet. She said: “As a team, we have grown to be more resilient. We reflected and looked at areas of improvement, pushing us to chase bigger dreams and success together as a team. Going into the new season, I hope that we would be able to bond even better as a team and work towards success as a whole.”

To top it off, Maximillian Ang Wei (Diploma in Sports And Leisure Management, Year 4) met the Asian Games ‘A’ Cut timing for the Men’s 200m Breaststroke and Asian Games ‘B’ Cut timing for the Men’s 200m Individual Medley and Men’s 100m Breaststroke. Amanda Lim Xiang Qi (alumna) also secured a place at her fourth Asian Games after winning the 50m freestyle with Asian Games 'A' cut timing.
