Fencers Wielded Historic Gold

Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships, FIE Grand Prix (Budapest)

It was an outing to be remembered for Sean Ho Jia Le at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships. This was his first outing to a competition of such scale where he was able to compete against Asia’s best fencers. To top it off, the Secondary 3 student-athlete, who is currently on Leave of Absence, was part of the Cadet Men’s Foil team that overcome Asian powerhouses and won a historic gold for Singapore at the Championships held from 24 February to 3 March 2023 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The gold medal came after the team defeated top seeds Japan 45-25 in the final on Sunday. Earlier on 24 February, Sean also won a bronze medal in the Cadet Men’s Foil Individual event.

“It was quite surreal being able to pit my skills against some of Asia’s best and come away with a bronze and gold medal. It feels good to know my level and I am looking forward to more of such competitions,” shared Sean in an interview with The Straits Times.

Third-year Diploma in Business Studies student-athlete, Si To Jian Tong, also took the stage to shine in the Junior Men’s Epee Individual event. He won Singapore’s second gold medal after defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Fedotov 15-12 in the final.

“I built momentum along the way and in the final, when I was losing, for a brief second I let negative thoughts consume me because I could not see any chances in being able to make something happen. Then I told myself that I do not want to go home with regrets so I gave it a real push. I am really happy to be the champion especially because I know I worked so hard for this,” said Jian Tong who took a gap year in 2022 to focus on full-time training.

Jian Tong also put up an impressive fight at the FIE Westend Grand Prix held in Budapest, Hungary from 10 to 12 March 2023. Despite not having any podium finish, he won all his preliminary pool bouts and came in top 45 amongst a pool of 342 top fencers in the world.

Our girls did just as well in the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships. Post-secondary student-athletes, Cheung Kemei and Tiffany Seet, were part of the Junior Women’s Team that took home the bronze medal in the Junior Team Women’s Foil event.
