34 student-athletes hosted 30 residents and 1 staff from the Champions Court Care Corner at the Singapore Sports School on 16 March 2023 where they took part in a games carnival. The aim was to engage the residents in sports activities.
Chair Yoga was conducted as a warm-up activity. They were then divided into six groups, and moved from station to station to play games that were designed to engage them with movements and thinking skills. Of course, prizes were also out to be won. Finally, a BINGO game was played and several of our guests walked away with prizes when they completed marking a row of numbers that were called out at random.
In preparation for the event, Ifeanyichukwu Asyaraff Ibrahim Molokwu from the Track and Field Academy, Jillian Su En-Yin from the Shooting Academy and I were nominated to be the emcees for the event. We prepared our script in English, Mandarin, and Malay so that our guests could understand us clearly. The rest of us were divided into smaller groups to prepare the game stations. We also purchased prizes, snacks, and drinks to be packed into the goodie bags. Other team members designed the event poster and game tickets. All of us had to make sure that the game stations operated smoothly.
Our guests were happy with the event as they were constantly smiling. They were always asking whether they could play again after completing a station. Of course, we said yes.
Through this experience, we have learnt that patience is an important aspect of life. This VIA event taught me to have the utmost respect and admiration for the elderly. This in turn reminded me that it is important to be grateful to our parents and what they have done for us.
