Bowling Brilliance At National Age Group Competition
National Age Group Championship
It was a smashing run of form for our bowlers who took part in the National Age Group Championship 2024 held from 9 to 16 March. They swept home a total of 18 medals, including one in every event in the Under-16 Girls category.
Secondary 4 student-athlete Hazel Tan Rou En led the medal sweep, winning first place in the Singles, Team, and Masters events in the Under-16 Girls category. Hazel carried forward the momentum from her successful Singles event and kept her cool to collect a total of 1596 pinfalls in the Masters event, finishing 11 pinfalls clear of her second-placed opponent.
“Going into the tournament, I told myself not to think about the outcome and solely focus on the process – which I did in all my events. However, after knowing that I was leading the all-events, I found myself being very tense on the Masters day. For the first game, I faced difficulty trying to find a suitable line to bowl because I was super focused on the outcome. Thankfully, with the reminder from my coaches to not think about the outcome, I managed to finish off strong.
I think winning is purely a bonus and what mattered was being able to learn something out of it. I liked that I did not give up, despite knowing that I wasn’t doing very well at the start. I managed to push through and finish off well.
I plan to continue working hard. There are lots of areas that need work. The main takeaways from this competition were to go in with an open mind, focus on the process, and give my best. From that, I’ve learned to be resilient, and I realised that nothing is impossible even when I did not start the game off well. I plan to apply what I’ve learned in my upcoming tournaments,” summarised Hazel.
Alumna Victoria Leong was also on the podium after performing well in the Under-18 Girls category. Victoria won second place in the doubles category and added a further gloss to her achievements for the day by winning the Masters event with a cool 1543 pinfalls.
In the Under-26 Girls category, post-secondary student-athletes Colleen Pee and Shirlene Wong Xue Lin took the top honours in the Singles and Doubles events respectively. They were joined by the terrific trio of Hazel Tan Wei Ning, Jerlyn Lam Si Ting, and Nura Salsabila Zulkifli who clinched 1st place in the team event. Ryan Goi Chee Hean and alumnus John Faragalla completed the medal haul with a 1st-place finish in the Under-26 Boys Team event.
