Swimmers’ Swimpressive Results At National School Games!
National School Games 2023 - Swimming
Our swimmers fielded a lean team for the National School Games which was held from 15 to 19 May 2023 at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Despite facing fierce competition from other schools, they rose to the challenge and performed well – bringing home 51 medals consisting of 24 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze medals and 6 Divisional Trophies. In the ‘B’ Boys 1500m Freestyle event, Secondary 4 student-athlete Ian Leong Wei Sheng got the medal haul up and running by securing the first gold medal of the event on the first day. Ian also clocked in a new personal best and lowered his timing by almost 12 seconds.
Senior swimmers such as Lim Wan Ting, Stephanie Clarissa Kwa,Trina Ling Sze Yi, Elle Nicole Tay Jiaqi and Clydi Chan also performed well in the ‘A’ Division Girls events. Wan Ting came in first in the 200m and 800m Freestyle, while Stephanie Clarissa took the top spot in the 400m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly. Trina also held her own by finishing first in the 50m and 200m Butterfly events. Elle Nicole swam well to top the 200m Breaststroke race. Clydi Chan then finished first in the 200m Individual Medley before teaming up with Elle Nicole, Stephanie and Trina to win the 4x50m Medley and 4x50 Freestyle relay events.
The five-day competition provided a good grounding for our younger swimmers as well. Secondary 1 student-athlete Joy Neo Ning Suan shared her experience competing in the ‘C’ Division Girls events. “Overall, I think that all the Secondary 1 swimmers did quite well. We got even more motivated to do well when we heard our school mates cheering from the supporters’ stands. We had setbacks in some events as we did not do well but we managed to overcome them in our subsequent events. This is also our first NSG. We raced against many strong swimmers and against our expectations, and we managed to win a few. From this experience, we learnt that there are still many swimmers who are way faster than us. This motivates us to train harder and swim faster. I am look forward to our next competition.”
Secondary 4 student-athlete Manda Low Zi Qi added, “Participating in the recent National School Games swimming competition at OCBC Arena was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience for the academy.
The competition was fierce, with swimmers showcasing their incredible talent and determination. However, our athletes put up a good fight and showcased our skills in each of our races. It was inspiring to witness such high levels of skill and sportsmanship among my peers. The camaraderie and support among competitors were evident, as we cheered each other on and exchanged encouraging smiles throughout the event.
Many of us achieved personal best times and finished among the top contenders, which was a significant accomplishment in itself. Overall, the ‘C’ Division boys and girls received 3rd overall. The ‘B’ Division boys and girls received 3rd and 2nd respectively while the ‘A’ Division boys and girls received 4th and 2nd respectively.
Participating in the National School Games swimming competition at OCBC Arena taught us valuable lessons beyond the pool. It taught us the importance of perseverance, discipline, and resilience. It showed us that success is not solely defined by medals but by personal growth, improvement, and the friendships forged along the way.
Looking back on this experience, we feel a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to compete at NSG. The memories created, the friendships formed, and the lessons learned will stay with use for a lifetime. The National School Games swimming competition at OCBC Arena will forever hold a special place in our hearts as a testament to our passion and love for the sport.”
