Secondary 4 gymnast Jovi Loh Jia Le made history as he won Singapore’s first-ever medal at the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships with a superb performance on the parallel bars. He placed 3rd with a score of 13.366, finishing behind two gymnasts from China. Singapore’s unprecedented bronze medal was won in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, during the Asian Junior Championships held from 16 to 19 May 2024.

This was only Jovi’s second time representing Singapore at the Asian Junior Championships. In an interview with The Straits Times, Jovi shared, “I’m definitely very happy and proud of winning bronze, and more importantly, I know where I place against gymnasts from top countries like Japan and China. The feeling will motivate me to improve further. What was more special to me is this milestone that I’ve reached. It’ll keep me going as I’ve proven to myself that I’m capable of getting a podium finish.”

His next major competition is the biennial World Junior Championships in 2025. In the long run, Jovi aspires to win gold at the Olympics and World Championships.

In addition to Jovi, the all-Sports School team at the Asian Juniors featured Asher Pua, second-year student-athlete in the Diploma in Business Studies programme and Secondary 3 gymnast Nathanael Pek Sek Kai.

In rhythmic gymnastics, Secondary 3 student-athlete Thea Chew did Singapore proud in Tashkent. From 2 to 4 May 2024, she competed in the Individual Hoop finals at the Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Asian Championships. Thea placed 6th with a score of 26.20, making her the highest-ranked Singaporean athlete in the competition.
